Fans are eagerly calling for a new season of this beloved Marvel series
Fans Still Call This Marvel Series 'One Of The Greatest' Seven Years After Its Release
A TV show doesn’t need to be fresh off the production line to capture the hearts of its audience. Some series have such staying power that they keep viewers talking and reminiscing for years.
With streaming platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+, older classics such as Friends, Gilmore Girls, and The Office are still being enjoyed by fans worldwide every single day.
While many would argue that some of the greatest TV series came out in the 90s or early 2000s, one show from the 2010s has continued to garner praise, even as it recently celebrated its seventh anniversary.
The series, based on a Marvel comic book of the same name, originally premiered on Netflix. However, it has since found a new home on Disney+ after the streaming license changed hands.
Netflix aired two seasons of the show before its rights reverted to Disney, which now owns it. The series, titled The Punisher, was removed from Netflix in 2022 as part of the transition.
With just 26 episodes, this hard-hitting Marvel adaptation left a lasting impression on its fans.
Jon Bernthal, known for his role in The Bear, brought Frank Castle (also known as The Punisher) to life in the series. His portrayal of a man driven by revenge after his family’s tragic murder struck a chord with many viewers.
The first season debuted on Netflix in 2017, with a second season following in 2019. The show’s original premiere date was November 17, which means it recently marked its seventh anniversary. This milestone inspired fans to flood social media with their thoughts on the series.
One fan tweeted that the show is "still one of [their] favorite Marvel series", while another wrote: "It was fantastic and I'm hoping he gets to continue his series like daredevil with Disney+!"
Echoing these sentiments, another viewer shared: "I'd love a new season of this,"
Someone else declared: "Seven years later, The Punisher still holds up as one of Marvel's best!"
The reviews aren’t just limited to social media. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show boasts an impressive 79 percent on its Popcornmeter, reflecting widespread acclaim. Over on IMDb, it holds an equally strong rating of 8.4/10.
While there’s been no official word on a third season, fans are excited to see Jon Bernthal reprising his role in another Marvel project.
According to Variety, Bernthal was spotted on the set of Daredevil: Born Again earlier this year, a series set to be released next year. His return as Frank Castle has reignited excitement among fans of The Punisher.
In 2021, Bernthal was asked about the possibility of his darker version of The Punisher fitting into the more family-friendly Marvel Cinematic Universe.
"That character, in particular, has real, real, real deep, deep meaning for me and resonance in me," he responded. "He's really in my heart, man. He's really in my bones. I'm enormously protective of that character."
Bernthal emphasized that Frank Castle’s character must retain a sense of “darkness” to stay true to his essence. He elaborated: "I think if there's any let up on that character, you do a disservice to the character, to every iteration of the character, to every comic book that's come before, and to all of the unbelievable fans of the character. This character means so much to people in the military."
"So like I said before, it's not about whether you do the character; it's about whether you can do it right, and I'm only interested in doing it right."
