#1 Hugo the dog, crowned the sleepiest pet in Britain, will doze off anywhere

Met Hugo the dog, who has officially been crowned 'the laziest pet in the UK'.

The 11-year-old King Charles spaniel can sleep anywhere, and dozes off for around 20 hours a day.

He has even been known to snooze the entire day, only waking for a brisk 20 minute walk and a quick bite to eat.

#2 Hugo sleeps for up to 20 hours a day, only waking up for brief walks and meals

Owner Charlotte Pike, who adopted Hugo last year after he was abandoned on the streets of Croydon, south London, says he is 'adorable' but was the 'laziest dog' she had ever met.

Speaking today after coming top in an online poll - beating off hundreds of other entries - the 32-year-old project manager said: "Hugo will sleep anywhere, and I mean anywhere, even standing up.

#3 Hugo goes to work with his owner Charlotte - where he also goes to sleep

"His favourite place to sleep in on his back - if he spots anything soft and cozy he's there as quick as a flash, the only time he moves fast, and his eyes are closed within a second.

"A few seconds later and he's snoring his head off."

Charlotte, who lives in Carshalton, Surrey, said Hugo was such a sleepyhead he was often difficult to wake up in the morning to accompany to her work in central London.

She said that if it was raining, Hugo demanded to be picked up - where he falls asleep in Charlotte's arms - and that once on the train he instantly dozed off.

#4 Willow, a seven-month-old grey ragdoll kitten, took second place

#5 Cavalier King Charles spaniel Mabel took third spot

She said Hugo even sometimes padded over to another friendly rail passenger and hopped up on their lap if they had a 'comfier looking coat on'.

She said: "He is shameless - if it's raining during his walk on the walk to work he'll demand to be picked up, and will fall asleep in my arms.

"And on the train, he'll go an lie on a stranger's lap if it looks cosier than mine."

#7 Tabby cat Leo is only eight months, but youthful energy is not something he's full of

When she gets to work with Hugo at her pet-friendly office near Tottenham Court Road, Hugo promptly goes under her desk and catches 40 winks.

He 'reluctantly' gets up for a 20-minute lunchtime walk and a snack, before creeping back under his master's desk and dozing off again.

Charlotte added: "He is an incredibly sleepy dog - I've never met one quite like him.

"As soon as I brought him home last year, he looked around the house for a minute and then plonked himself on the sofa and went to sleep.

"He loves sleeping on his back as he can get his tummy tickled as he sleeps and is out like a light as soon as he gets the chance - he even falls asleep as he's standing up waiting to go for a walk!"

Charlotte, who volunteers at the Riverside Animal Centre in Croydon - where Hugo was handed in last year - said Hugo didn't have anything wrong with him, he was just a 'natural sleepyhead'.
