The former girlfriend of Meghan Markle’s ex-husband says he sensed something immediately
A woman who once dated Meghan Markle’s ex-husband says he had a telling reaction when he found out that his former wife was in a relationship with Prince Harry. The moment caught her attention, and she later shared the story publicly.
Markle began dating film producer Trevor Engelson in 2004, and the two eventually married in 2011. Their marriage, however, did not last long, and they went their separate ways a few years later before finalizing their divorce in 2014.
According to the Daily Mail, Engelson briefly dated Bethenny Frankel around the same time Meghan and Prince Harry’s relationship became public knowledge in 2016, which helped set the stage for this unexpected exchange.
Frankel told The Toast that she did not initially recognize Markle, other than knowing she was “a woman from a show called Suits,” a series Frankel had never watched. She said her familiarity with Meghan was limited until the news headlines caught her attention.
Once she saw photos of Meghan and Harry together, she decided to reach out. She texted Engelson to ask, “is this your ex,” and he confirmed that it was indeed her.
Frankel then said she followed up by asking him, “Do you think she’s going to close?” referring to whether he believed Meghan and Harry would eventually get married. She claimed Engelson replied by saying: "Oh, she'll close."
Frankel’s story suggests that when Engelson learned Meghan was dating Prince Harry, he immediately sensed that the relationship would become serious. To him, it seemed clear that they would likely end up getting married.
Although Meghan and Harry went public in 2016, their engagement was confirmed the following year. By May 19, 2018, they were officially married in a ceremony watched around the world.
As most people know, the couple later decided to step back as senior members of the royal family. They have since moved to California, where they now raise their two children, Archie, six, and Lilibet, four.
The couple has continued to protect their children’s privacy as much as possible, with Meghan explaining: "All you want to do as parents is protect them."
"And so, as we can see what's happening in the online space, we know that there's a lot of work to be done there, and we're just happy to be able to be a part of change for good."
Since the beginning of her relationship with Prince Harry, Meghan has faced extreme trolling and ongoing harassment online. Given that climate, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have made a clear effort to keep their family out of the spotlight whenever they can.
The former Suits actor stepped away from most acting roles once her engagement to Prince Harry became public. While she has appeared in interviews, specials, and documentaries, she has not returned to the type of acting career she had before joining the royal family.
Still, there are new claims that she may return to the screen in a cameo for the film Close Personal Friends, where she would reportedly be playing herself. Whether that appearance happens remains to be seen, but it has sparked interest among fans of her earlier work.
