Michael Jackson’s youngest child made the decision to change his nickname after being known as Blanket for over a decade.

The Thriller singer’s youngest son, who was officially named Prince Michael Jackson II, was born via surrogate in 2002.

His nickname, ‘Blanket’, came about because his father was often seen wrapping him in a blanket to protect his identity and maintain privacy.

This nickname stuck with him all the way through his childhood and into his teenage years.

But in 2015, he decided it was time for a change.

Almost 10 years ago, ‘Blanket’ adopted a new nickname—'Bigi’—and now goes by the full name Bigi Jackson.

Interestingly, Bigi isn’t interested in pursuing a musical career like his famous father.

Instead, he’s focused on advocating for climate change awareness.

In a 2021 interview with ITV’s Good Morning Britain, he opened up about living with his father’s legacy and shared why addressing climate change is so important to him.

Bigi said, “There’s a lot of really cool stuff here, there’s a lot of history here in this house and the studio here, that’s what he was all about.

“That’s what each of us want to do, make some things that people hopefully enjoy but also that benefit their lives.”

He added, “I do think it’s important that we all know about [climate change], I think we have some work to do, but our generation knows how important it is.”

After his father’s death in 2009, Bigi was raised by his grandmother, Katherine Jackson, along with his siblings, Prince Michael Jackson I and Paris Jackson.

Though he was brought up by his grandmother, Bigi has since moved into his own mansion in California.

People who have reacted to his name change and activism have praised Bigi for everything he’s been through.

One person commented, “It’s not easy coping with the death of a parent. Glad to see he’s doing better. Only wish good things for the offspring of MJ.”

Another person shared that they “love his name and wish him a lot of luck,” while someone else added that if they had been nicknamed Blanket, they “would change my name too” and hoped Bigi Jackson could have a “normal life.”

A fourth person wrote, “So wonderful of him to realize and speak up about climate change.

“It’s very real and sad, and we all must come together to slow it down as much as possible. For our children, our grandchildren, and future generations.”

As for those who might be hoping that the youngest Jackson will one day follow in his father’s footsteps, Bigi once admitted that he ‘can’t sing or dance’.

So, while he may carry his father’s legacy in other ways, it seems he’s carving out his own unique path.
