People are flooding to social media in fear over the 'first ever Mickey Mouse horror film'.
Mickey Mouse Horror Trailer Has Been Released And 'Children Will Be Traumatized'
If you're already feeling sad about Christmas and not being able to watch classic festive films featuring iconic characters like Mickey Mouse, you might be surprised to know that Mickey is making a comeback.
But be warned, this new movie will change the way you look at this beloved childhood character forever.
Following in the footsteps of Winnie-the-Pooh, Mickey Mouse, specifically his 1928 versions from "Steamboat Willie" and "Plane Crazy," has entered the public domain.
And what's a more unexpected way to celebrate than casting the famous mouse in a horror movie?
While the Walt Disney Company still holds the copyright to other versions of Mickey and Minnie, the 1928 depictions are now 'free to copy, share and build on' since January 1.
Grabbing on to this opportunity, a group of filmmakers have quickly utilized Mickey in a way that's sure to leave an unsettling impression.
The trailer for the upcoming horror movie "Mickey's Mouse Trap" was released on YouTube, promising a chilling reinterpretation of the beloved character.
The movie’s official synopsis is quite interesting:
"It’s Alex’s 21st birthday, but she’s stuck at the amusement arcade on a late shift so her friends decide to surprise her, but a masked killer dressed as Mickey Mouse decides to play a game of his own with them which she must survive."
In the teaser, a clip from "Steamboat Willie" is used, but rather than being comforting, it’s paired with eerie music, creating a nightmarish atmosphere.
The trailer also shows a figure in a distorted Mickey Mouse mask ominously approaching its victims.
The trailer ominously features the words: "A place for fun, a place for friends, a place for hunting. #Themouseisout."
However, the disclaimer was pretty obvious: "THIS IS NOT NOT A DISNEY FILM OR PRODUCTION. IT IS NOT TO AFFILIATED OR ENDORSED BY DISNEY IN ANY WAY."
Directed by Jamie Bailey and produced by Paul Whitney, Mark Popejoy, Alexander Gausman, and Andrew Agopsowicz, with co-producer Mem Ferda from Filmcore, the film features actors Sophie McIntosh, Callum Sywyk, Allegra Nocita, and Simon Phillips.
Disney fans on social media have been quick to express their shock and discomfort at seeing Mickey in such an uncharacteristic role.
Reactions range from dismay to disbelief, with one X (formerly Twitter) user exclaiming, "Children will be traumatized."
Others have expressed a desire for more original uses of childhood icons, while some lament the distortion of their cherished memories.
"My eyes need bleach," another wrote.
A third commented: "Can we actually do something original with childhood icons that have entered the public domain that isn’t horror FOR FIVE MINUTES."
"Already what hell," a fourth added.
And a final resolved: "Wow so y’all really said screw our childhood."
The release date for "Mickey's Mouse Trap" is yet to be announced, leaving fans and the curious alike in suspense.
