#1 HOW AWESOME IS THIS?!

While geography isn't always a subject that inspires excitement, this weather phenomenon is pretty cool.

Known as a "rain bomb" (or a microburst, if you want the technical term), it occurs when hot air rises, and mixes with heavy, rain-filled clouds (usually during a thunderstorm).

#2 THIS WAS CAPTURED IN QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA, BY FARMER PETER THOMPSON

The hot air causes the rain in the clouds to evaporate, significantly cooling the air around them. Then, suddenly, this cooling air rapidly drops, taking the remaining rain and winds of up to 150 mph with it.

#3 IT’S PRETTY COOL TO SAY THE LEAST

We would seriously not want to get caught in that without an umbrella

#4 You can check out a video of a “wet microburst” in action (taken by professional monsoon-chaser Bryan Snider) here:

Microbursts are a serious danger to planes flying at low-altitude (so landing or taking off), due to the changes in air speed they cause.
