In September 2019, when Alicia Navarro was 14 years old, she disappeared from her Glendale, Arizona, home.

When she allegedly snuck out of the house while her parents were asleep, their daughter left them a handwritten letter that read: “I ran away. I will be back. I swear. I’m sorry,” the next day, KTAR News reports.

Navarro, who is now 18 years old, went to a police station in a small Montana hamlet near the Canadian border and gave her name.

Jose Santiago, a spokesman for Glendale Police, said during a press conference yesterday (July 26), "She is by all accounts safe, she is by all accounts healthy, and she is by all accounts happy."

The matter is still being investigated, according to police lieutenant Scott Waite, who stated that the disappearance began as a runaway. Uncertainty exists over the specifics of her journey to Montana.

“Every indication she’s given to us so far is that she wilfully left her home,” he said. “Now the dynamics surrounding that decision are obviously something we’re looking into.”

Navarro entered the police station alone, and she has spoken to officers alone each time.

“She showed up at a police department,” Santiago said. “She identified herself as Alicia Navarro. She basically asked for help to clear her off of a missing juvenile list.

“She is not in any kind of trouble. She is not facing any kind of charges.”

The reunion of Navarro and her mother was "emotionally overwhelming" for them both, according to Police Lt. Waite.

"I can say, for everyone involved, including the detectives, it was extremely overwhelming," Waite added.

"We are only [beginning] to put together the puzzle that is her disappearance and her return. I would only ask for patience.

"We can only imagine what she's going through as well as her family. This is probably only the beginning of where this investigation will go."

The Montana town where Navarro was discovered was kept a secret by the police.

She indicated that it wasn't her goal and was "very sorry [as] to what she has put her mother through." A bond with her mother and moving on with her life are both goals for Navarro.

After Navarro went missing, the FBI and the Center for Missing and Exploited Children got engaged in the search. Over the years, authorities said, thousands of tips were sent.

Spokesman Santiago said: "There’s a lot of mixed emotions with this particular announcement that we are having. We are happy and at the same time, we are hopeful that we will be able to supply this family with a little more closure.

“For more than four years detectives here have followed up on thousands of leads. This case is far from being closed. We are continuing to investigate her whereabouts for the last four years and will do so alongside our federal partners."
