#1 A case of missing mushrooms led one man to walk away with $5 million in winnings from the New York Lottery.

#2 When John Lewis went to the Tops Market one day this past June, he was just stopping by to get a single food item for a recipe.

He ended up walking out a millionaire.

#3 John Lewis is one of those who have never bought lottery tickets as he thinks they are just a waste of money.

But one night he did and his first time to scratch a card gave him a fortune that could support him for the rest of his days.

#4 Lewis told New York Lottery officials:

“I ran to the store before work to get mushrooms for my spaghetti sauce, It’s a two-day sauce my dad used to make.”

#5 The New Yorker only spent $10 on the Set for Life ticket.

“I never put money in those things,” he said. “What possessed me to be in that store at that time with just the right amount of money in my hand for that machine I will never know. I have been asking myself that question over and over for days. In the end, though, I’m just glad it was me.”

#6 The ticket turned out to be a $5 million top prize winner.

#7 The 56-year-old man said there was a silent voice that spoke to him that night that urged him to buy the ticket.

#8 According to AWM, the ticket he won comes with a lifetime payout.

This means he will get $172,068 every year for the rest of his days.

#9 Lewis chose to take the prize in annual payments rather than a lump sum.

He'll get more than $172,000 annually for the rest of his life. Vega says that means he could end up with more than $5 million in all. "God forbid if he should pass -- and he did take the annuity -- we would guarantee to pay his estate up to $5 million, but we will stop at $5 million because he's passed -- God forbid. But if he lives another 60 years, this can duplicate to $15 million," Vega said.

#10 Lewis said he plans to help a family member with medical bills, but he has no other immediate plans for the windfall.

"I was planning on working at something till the day I died. This may open a few more doors, but we're happy with the life we have. It's a good life," he said.
