Mom María del Carmen García set alight to her daughter's rapist after he was allowed out of prison early and spoke to her.
Mom Burned Daughter’s Rapist Alive After He Taunted Her Following His Release From Prison
A mother was imprisoned for killing the man who had raped her daughter.
In October 1998, 13-year-old Verónica Rodríguez García from Benejúzar in Alicante, Spain, was brutally raped at knifepoint by her 63-year-old neighbor, Antonio Cosme.
Antonio Cosme was found guilty of the crime and sentenced to prison. Yet, for Verónica and her family, the nightmare was far from over.
At the time, the local community was divided. Some residents could not believe the accusations and refused to support Verónica, while others stood by her, as reported by Meaww.
Verónica's mother, María del Carmen García, had to support her daughter through the trauma and deal with the negative reactions from the community.
She also sought justice in a situation that seemed to offer none.
Antonio Cosme served time and was eventually released on parole after seven years.
However, in June 2005, he reportedly crossed paths with María. As El Pais quoted, Cosme asked her: "How’s your daughter?"
In response, María went to buy gasoline, found Cosme, and poured the fuel on him before setting him on fire. Cosme succumbed to his injuries a week later.
María was convicted of killing Cosme and sentenced in July 2009. She received a nine-and-a-half-year prison term.
There was significant public outcry over her conviction, with many believing she deserved sympathy rather than punishment, given the horrific crime committed against her daughter.
In 2010, María’s sentence was reduced to five-and-a-half years after her attorney argued that she had acted under temporary insanity.
Her sentence was put on hold in 2011 while a pardon application was considered, but it was ultimately rejected in 2013, according to The Mirror.
By 2018, María was finally released from prison.
Her story was the subject of the HBO Max documentary series titled Hell on Earth: The Verónica Case.
A viewer of the series noted that María 'wanted to make this doc to get the truth out because people in the village still believe he’s innocent, the mom is insane and the daughter is a w***e'.
The viewer also expressed frustration, saying: "I am so angry at the world."
In the documentary, Verónica is reported to have said: "My mom protected me and now that she’s free, I protect her from the media."
