A woman was sentenced to prison for killing her daughter's rapist by setting him on fire.

Verónica Rodríguez García, 13, of Benejúzar, Alicante, Spain, was raped at knifepoint in October 1998 by her 63-year-old neighbor Antonio Cosme.

The struggle was far from ended even after Cosme was found guilty and given a prison sentence.

According to Meaww, when the teenager accused her neighbor of rape, the community was divided with some people unwilling to accept the possibility and others supporting her.

Verónica's mother, María del Carmen García, had to support her traumatized daughter, endure public criticism, and seek justice simultaneously.

After being found guilty and given a nine-year prison sentence, Antonio Cosme was supposedly reunited with María seven years after being released on parole.

El Pais quoted Cosme as saying that he ran into María in June 2005 and questioned her: "How’s your daughter?"

Afterwards, it is said that María went to get a bottle of gasoline, came across Cosme, doused him with fuel, and burned him.

Owing to his burns, Cosme reportedly passed away a week later.

After being found guilty, the mother was given a nine-and-a-half-year term for killing the rapist in July 2009.

Many were shocked by the mother's conviction and sentence given what Cosme had done to her daughter, and numerous petitions and appeals were filed.

In 2010, following her attorney's plea that she had acted in temporary insanity, her sentence was lowered to five and a half years.

Her sentence was postponed in 2011 while a pardon application was ongoing; however, according to The Mirror, the application was denied in 2013.

The HBO Max documentary series Hell on Earth: The Verónica Case was inspired by García's experience.

A viewer who has seen the documentary claims that María 'wanted to make this doc to get the truth out because people in the village still believe he’s innocent, the mom is insane and the daughter is a w***e'.

"I am so angry at the world," the viewer added.

Verónica is said to have resolved the following in the docuseries: "My mom protected me and now that she’s free, i protect her from the media."
