Business is thriving, according to a woman who decided to hire her husband out to other ladies for odd jobs at a rate of $45 per hour or $286 per day.

Laura Young, 38, of Milton Keynes, had the idea after listening to a podcast about a man who made a job by assembling flat-pack furniture for other people.

In June, the mother-of-three advertised on Facebook and the Nextdoor app, praising her husband James' general DIY, painting, decorating, tiling, and carpet-laying skills.

The 42-year-old, who was expecting she might giggle a little, soon got his first client and was working from 9 am to 8 pm six days a week.

He is available to be hired by anyone in need of assistance, both men and women, and jobs range from assisting with hanging curtains or a TV to rebuilding a wall.

James takes care of the labor-related matters, and Laura manages the website and social media accounts.

The couple couldn't have predicted the business's success.

For the Christmas season, the smart couple has introduced a new service, enabling installations of holiday lights both inside and outside.

Laura said: 'I never expected it to take off as much as it has.’

'We've only been going four months and it got to a point where there was so much work coming in that James was working six days a week.’

'We've had to start turning jobs down and reduce our hours, so now we do Monday to Friday 9 am-5 pm.’

'We had our own building plans that we've not even started as we've just been so busy.’

'We booked our first job for January too.'

James had to quit his job as a warehouse worker to care for Laura and their three children, two of whom have autism, full-time.

James, who was given his own autistic diagnosis four years ago, has always been able to concentrate on topics like construction and building.

Laura said: 'He's really good at building things and doesn't bother with the instructions.’

'So I thought this would be something he could do.’

'James doesn't come from a trade background but his grandad was a nuclear engineer, and they think he was also on the spectrum.’

'He's got a very methodical mind and can think outside the box. He sees things differently.'

Within a few days, Laura's Facebook messages were flooded with inquiries about the craftsmanship of her husband.

Even demands for more than 150 miles of distance came from the couple.

Laura said: 'The first customer needed a door frame replaced and then from there I just had people enquiring on the Facebook page.’

'It went from regular flatpack to so much more, like laying a carpet and rebuilding a wall.’

'We even had requests as far as Manchester, to which we told them it may be more practical to find someone closer due to the extra costs, but of course, we would have done it!'

Plumbing and electrical work are not his expertise.

Instead of charging per job, they bill by the hour at a rate of $45 or by the day at a rate of $286.

Additionally, they give discounts to people who are over 65, disabled, carers, and recipients of universal credit, as well as those who work for the NHS and emergency services.

Laura said: 'We know what it's like to be parents of children with special needs and we've known what it's like to struggle for money or have to save.'
