A mother of two is sharing her story after what she calls a stroke of 'luck' and she says it's all thanks to her Crocs. She believes that wearing the popular shoes prevented her from losing her foot after a shocking accident where she ended up shooting herself.

It all happened on March 31 of last year when 26-year-old Marissa Jones was visiting a friend's home in San Antonio, Texas. While there, she noticed something alarming - a gun had been left out, positioned near her friend’s bedroom door.

As a nurse and the mom of two young kids, Marissa acted quickly out of concern. Wanting to protect her one-year-old daughter Ava, who was also with her, she decided to slide the firearm under the bed to keep it out of reach.

But just as she started pushing the gun under the bed using her foot, she didn’t realize it had come into contact with the bed’s frame. That unexpected contact caused the gun to discharge, firing directly into her foot.

She explained: "Under the bed there's a pole to stand the bed" up and I guess the back of the gun hit that and it just went off. It happened so fast.""

Marissa says the bullet struck her right foot, and the pain was so intense she instantly jumped onto the bed, overwhelmed by the shock of what had just happened.

According to reports, around 40 pellets hit her foot from the gunshot. Marissa gives full credit to her Crocs for helping protect her foot and preventing what could have been a devastating outcome.

"I was wearing my Crocs and the pellets actually went through my Crocs - my Croc saved my foot," she said. "If I'd been barefoot everything would've been shattered. I would've lost my foot, it was a complete freak accident."

Right after the incident, she was rushed to University Hospital where doctors worked on her injury, and she stayed there for a total of 10 days.

Medical staff were able to remove 20 out of the 40 pellets lodged in her foot. Marissa is now preparing for a skin graft, which doctors believe will help with the healing of the wound left behind from the initial surgery.

While she still depends on crutches and uses a wheelchair to get around, she tries to focus on the positive side of things. She feels incredibly 'grateful' that things didn’t end in the most terrifying way, a thought that continues to replay in her mind.

Marissa holds on to hope that she will 'eventually' walk normally again. Despite the long road to recovery, she keeps reminding herself how 'so lucky' she was to have been 'wearing [her] Crocs' at that moment.

"I thank the brand so much. I feel so grateful I was wearing them that day," she continued. "I will continue to buy every single pair I lay my eyes on. I always wore my Crocs before this, I'm a Croc-wearing girl."

She shared that her friends feel terrible about what happened and carry a lot of guilt. Now, Marissa says she’s taking steps to learn more about proper 'gun safety' so she can prevent anything like this from happening again.

Above all, what matters most to her now is this one thing: "I feel lucky it wasn't my hand or face or even my daughter."
