#1 Harriet Tubman Announced As First Female On US Curreny

The US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew announced that they have decided to put abolitionist leader Harriet Tubman on a new $20 bill. The decision caps a public campaign asking for the change and months of deliberation by the Treasury to either replace Alexander Hamilton on the $10 bill or Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. With the announcement, Harriet Tubman will become the first woman on U.S. currency.

#2 Tubman Is Known For Her Role As A Conductor In The Underground Railroad

Harriet Tubman escaped slavery to become a leading abolitionist. She led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom along the route of the Underground Railroad. She was born in Maryland in 1820, and successfully escaped in 1849. Yet she returned many times to rescue both family members and non-relatives from the plantation system. She led hundreds to freedom in the North as the most famous "conductor" on the Underground Railroad, an elaborate secret network of safe houses organized for that purpose. She often arranged to have sponsors who would house runaway slaves in cellars or attics until they could move further North to settle.

#3 Slave Owner Replaced By A Former Slave On The Twenty Dollar Bill

The treasury Department originally had planned to replace Alexander Hamilton on the 10 dollar bill, but after his name rose to fame a few years ago with the hit Broadway musical, the department decided to replace Andrew Jackson on the twenty. Jackson was a slave owner, and the support from the African American community grew in the last 12 months to have him removed from the note when the Treasury announced it was revamping all currency by 2020.

#4 Other Historical Women Were Pondered

The Treasury began a survey to find out which female would most likely be appreciated or honored by being placed on a new bill, and the names were those of very successful historical ladies including Eleanor Roosevelt.

In the last 10 months, a woman's organization called 'Women on the 20' collected over 600,000 signatures to honor Tubman on the new currency.

#5 Treasury Says Other Women Will Be Placed On Currency In The Future

Other women who were touted as possible replacements for Jackson on the $20 were Rosa Parks (pictured), Clara Barton, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B Anthony, who was already minted on the one dollar coin.

The US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew told reporters that Tubman is only the first female to grace currency. They plan to redesign all bills by 2020, and other women will either be placed on the backside of new bills or, like Tubman, replace current figures on the front of new bills.
