A fierce debate is raging online over whether or not it's acceptable to pierce a baby's ears as a number of parents have been sharing videos of their little ones in the piercing chair
Mums Are Under Fire For Piercing Their Babies Ears
Some moms have come under fire on TikTok for sharing videos showing their babies having their ears pierced.
In posts that have caused a divide on the social media app, some users felt that it was "cruel" for babies to get the procedure as they were too young to give their consent, while others called it "cute" and highlighted the fact they wouldn't be able to remember the pain.
In one video, that has since gone viral, a mom called Kristy can be seen holding her daughter still while she gets her ears pierced.
The baby starts crying as the needle goes through one ear and her mum attempts to comfort her.
The post, which has been viewed more than six million times, garnered a mixed response.
One person wrote: "Poor baby."
Another commented: "Shouldn't be allowed. Completely unnecessary. Wasn't her choice."
One person wrote: "Tell me your baby is a fashion accessory, without telling me your baby is a fashion accessory..."
Another said: "Absolutely unnecessary. I could never put my baby girl in pain like that for my own selfish reasons."
A third replied: "Sorry but why would anyone get their baby's ears pierced, surely should be their choice when they're older?"
However, rushing to her defence, a third shared: "It's HER kid and A LOT of mums get their babies' ears pierced."
And a fourth added: "It's not abuse. I got my ears pierced before I was even a year old and I'm glad I don't remember."
In a follow-up post, Kirsty showed off her daughter's new earrings, describing her as "precious".
But Kristy isn't the only mom to receive backlash for piercing her baby's ears. Another mom called Norma encountered the same reaction when she shared her daughter's piercing process.
The video, which has been watched over 8 million times, shows her baby erupting into tears.
One person asked: "Why make the most beautiful baby cry?"
However, another wrote: "So cute."

According to the NHS, ear piercing is generally a safe procedure as long as it is carried out by a licensed practitioner.
Another mum recently sparked a debate over how a baby's ears should be pierced.
The parent, Marisa Carpineta, divided opinions when she told her TikTok followers: "Stop using piercing guns on your babies. Get them pierced at a tattoo and piercing shop instead."
Alongside this, she shared a clip of her six-month-old daughter getting her ears pierced.
After the piercing was over, the mum joked her baby was giving her a "dirty look," before sharing a clip of her looking smiley and content, with the caption, "happy baby."
The comments on the video were similar to those on Kirsty's video, with some saying it should be "illegal".
