Despite all the odds, a heartbroken widow's life took an unexpected turn as she found love in her late husband's brother. Despite harsh criticism, this courageous mother embraced the unusual and went against the grain.
'My Husband Died So I Fell For His Brother — Haters Call Him ‘Uncle Daddy’ But We’re In Love'
Kaitlin Norton had just lost her husband, Aaron Smith, to a heroin overdose when an unexpected spark developed with his older sibling, Rory.
Despite the lingering pain of loss, Kaitlin was pulled to Rory's warmth and care.
"I was not expecting his voice to remind me of Aaron so much," the 30-year-old widow from New Hampshire told Truly. "It was such a comfort."
Now, seven years have passed, and they continue to share their lives, co-parenting four children, including two of their own.
It wasn't always smooth sailing, as Rory initially harbored a deep dislike for Norton when she and Aaron grappled with prescription drug addiction in their early days.
But love's unexpected power prevailed, healing and transforming their lives.
Today, they stand united, defying their troubled past and cherishing the family they've built on the foundation of love and resilience.
"I didn't really trust her," Rory said.
In 2015, Norton admitted that she and Aaron were "stealing from people and doing whatever we could to get high."
After realizing the destructive path of her addiction, Norton bravely decided to seek rehabilitation, while Aaron chose a different path, declining the opportunity for help.
Even during her time in the facility, he would call her, and she could sense he was still trapped in his drug use.
The emotional toll became unbearable, leading Norton to stop taking his calls. Tragically, just a week before her release, she received devastating news—Aaron, only 22 years old, succumbed to his overdose.
During grief, Norton found solace in reaching out to Rory, Aaron's older brother, seeking comfort in his presence.
During her visits, Rory would also spend time with Norton's son, Camden, creating an unexpected bond that would eventually blossom into a love story that defied all odds.
"That's kind of how we started getting closer," Kaitlin shared, reflecting on the beginning of her relationship with Rory.
Rory openly admitted that they were both initially "hesitant" to reveal their love to family members.
Even Jess, Aaron and Rory's mom, confessed to feeling uneasy about the situation, finding it "weird" initially.
However, as time went on, their love proved to be genuine and steadfast, breaking down barriers and winning the acceptance of their loved ones.
"My first thought was, 'How would Aaron feel?' I knew we would not like it at all. He would not be happy," said Rory.
It was only after a heartfelt conversation between Rory and his mother that she finally began to come around to the idea of their relationship.
Their candid discussion allowed Rory to share his feelings, assuring his mother that their love was genuine and rooted in the best intentions.
Gradually, understanding and acceptance replaced initial reservations, and with time, Kaitlin and Rory's relationship found its place within the family.
Despite facing criticism and haters jokingly referring to him as her children's "daddy uncle," Kaitlin Norton, a mother of four, remains steadfast in her relationship with her deceased husband's brother, Rory Smith.
The couple has learned to brush off negative comments and embrace their love, insisting they are good for each other.
Their journey of finding solace and happiness has proved that true love knows no boundaries and can weather any storm.
"Something bad happened to her, something bad happened to me — and basically, we found comfort in one another," Rory said. "The negativity doesn't do anything to us … I think we're good for one another."
