Despite all of the advances in medicine over the last few decades, cancer remains one of the leading causes of death. Doctors are, however, coming closer to a treatment thanks to technological advancements.
Nanobot Technology Can Seek and Destroy Cancer Cells
The machines' nanoparticles are made of gold, and they fold and unfold repeatedly inside a cell to kill it without the use of dangerous anti-cancer medications or medication.
One of the research's primary experts, Dr. Youngdo Jeong, stated that it "could be a new alternative to overcome the side effects of existing chemotherapy."
This is the breakthrough in cancer treatment this month.
Another breakthrough reported, after receiving experimental immunotherapy, a dozen rectal cancer patients in the United States saw their cancer disappear.
Over six months, the patients were given a dose of a medicine called dostarlimab every three weeks, which successfully treated all of them without the need for chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or surgery.
Dr. Luis Diaz Jr., one of the researchers, said it was the first time a treatment 'completely' eradicated cancer in patients.
"I believe this is the first time this has happened in the history of cancer," he said.
The medicine works by boosting the immune systems of patients, allowing them to more quickly recognize and fight cancer cells.
Meanwhile, American researchers used a 'game-changing' ultrasound treatment to successfully eradicate liver tumors in rats without the need for surgery.
Histotripsy is a technique that uses microsecond-long pulses of ultrasonic waves to destroy cancer tissue with a great degree of precision. It is currently being investigated in human clinical studies.
