In a recent Variety interview, Natalie Portman cautioned against children acting in movies, citing her own fortunate experience. This echoes sadly in former child actor Jake Lloyd's post-"Star Wars" challenges, reinforcing Portman's warning.
Natalie Portman Says She Was Lucky Not To Be ‘Harmed’ As She Warns Child Actors About Hollywood
Speaking candidly about her days as a child actor, Natalie Portman expressed her opinion that kids shouldn't play actors in movies.
The Star Wars performer claimed she believes her safety as a child star was a result of luck in an interview with Variety regarding her new film May December.
She also mentioned how much of a difference it made to have parents who were always watching out for her.
The astrophysicist and actor, however, also stated that she doesn't believe kids should ever work in movies.
When asked if she would advise young people to pursue careers in the acting and show industry, Portman gave a direct answer.
She said: "I would not encourage young people to go into this. I don’t mean ever; I mean as children. I feel it was almost an accident of luck that I was not harmed, also combined with very overprotective, wonderful parents. You don’t like it when you’re a kid, and you’re grateful for it when you’re an adult."
She continued: "I’ve heard too many bad stories to think that any children should be part of it."
Nevertheless, she admitted that there have been advancements in the industry over the past few years.
She added: "Having said that, I know all the conversations that we’ve been having these past few years. It’s made people more aware and careful.”
"But ultimately, I don’t believe that kids should work. I think kids should play and go to school."
Sadly, what she said is very true for child actor Jake Lloyd, who acted with Portman in Star Wars - The Phantom Menace. Now 34, Lloyd has stopped acting completely.
He talked about how his life turned into a "living hell" once the movie came out since he had to conduct up to sixty interviews every day.
At school, he was also the victim of constant bullying, with other kids calling him names and being "mean."
Lloyd was arrested in 2015 for reckless driving, driving without a license, and resisting arrest; regrettably, this had a severe negative impact on his mental health.
After a while, Lloyd received a schizophrenia diagnosis and was admitted to a mental health facility.
Lloyd talked about how he'd come to "hate" being in the spotlight.
Portman's feelings toward youngsters playing in movies are understandable, having witnessed something similar quite early in her career.
Portman's candid remarks shed light on the dark side of child stardom, as exemplified by Jake Lloyd's struggles.
The conversation initiated by Portman underscores the need for continued awareness in the entertainment industry. This awareness is crucial to implementing reforms that safeguard the well-being of young talents.
