Warner Bros. has announced a new Lord of the Rings film set to be released in 2026.

In an earnings call on May 9th, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav revealed that the upcoming film will "explore storylines yet to be told".

He also mentioned that Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens "will be involved" in every phase of the project.

This film is anticipated to kick off a new series of movies diving back into the fantastical realm J.R.R. Tolkien crafted.

Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit films covered the most well-known parts of Tolkien’s universe.

However, there are still plenty of untold stories and unused source materials remaining.

Zaslav expressed his enthusiasm, stating: "Lord of the Rings is one of the most successful and revered franchises in history and presents a significant opportunity for theatrical business."

It was previously announced last year that plans were underway for new Lord of the Rings films.

Moreover, it was made clear that these new films would not interfere with the narratives of Jackson's earlier films.

Now, we have a bit more clarity about the release timeline, who will be involved, and the potential themes of the film.

Warner Bros. executives Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy have secured a deal to produce "multiple" films based on Tolkien's works, so the 2026 release won’t be the last.

In February 2023, they commented: "Twenty years ago, New Line took an unprecedented leap of faith to realize the incredible stories, characters and world of The Lord of the Rings on the big screen.

"The result was a landmark series of films that have been embraced by generations of fans.

"But for all the scope and detail lovingly packed into the two trilogies, the vast, complex and dazzling universe dreamed up by J.R.R. Tolkien remains largely unexplored on film.

"The opportunity to invite fans deeper into the cinematic world of Middle-earth is an honor, and we are excited to partner with Middle-earth Enterprises and Embracer on this adventure."

The original Lord of the Rings films not only became beloved cinematic treasures but also amassed huge box office earnings and numerous awards.

They captivated millions by vividly bringing Tolkien’s epic fantasy to life, albeit they did leave some fans disappointed by excluding the character Tom Bombadil.

While the Hobbit films didn’t receive the same level of adoration, they still retain a dedicated group of fans who have spent their time meticulously re-editing the films.

However, Peter Jackson's films are no longer the sole representations of live-action Lord of the Rings.

Amazon has invested heavily in their series, The Rings of Power.

The fantasy genre has experienced a surge in popularity, with numerous new shows and films trying to capture the magic of Lord of the Rings.

Many fans are hopeful that Howard Avy-Shore will return to compose the music for these new films.
