The viral Oscars selfie taken by Bradley Cooper in 2014 included some of the most recognizable celebrities in Hollywood.
Last night once again marked Hollywood’s biggest annual celebration — the Academy Awards.
Actors, directors, and filmmakers from across the world traveled to the United States to attend the prestigious ceremony.
The event took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and featured many of the biggest stars in the film industry.
Some of the most talked-about films released over the past year included One Battle After Another, Hamnet, Sinners, and KPop Demon Hunters.
Each of those titles walked away with major awards during the ceremony held on March 15.
One of the night’s biggest winners turned out to be One Battle After Another, which secured six Academy Awards overall.
Among its wins were the prestigious Best Picture award, along with Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director.
In second place was Sinners, which collected four Oscars.
The film also brought actor Michael B. Jordan his first ever Academy Award when he won Best Actor.
While stars such as Jordan, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jessie Buckley, and Timothée Chalamet were some of the biggest names attending the ceremony this year, the scene looked very different when you look back twelve years.
Back in 2014, the films dominating the Oscars included Dallas Buyers Club, Frozen, Blue Jasmine, American Hustle, and The Great Gatsby.
However, aside from the awards themselves, one moment from that night quickly became one of the most memorable in Oscars history.
The viral selfie taken during the show spread across social media within minutes.
The photo appeared to have been taken by Bradley Cooper and featured a cluster of Hollywood stars squeezed into the frame.
Among them were Jared Leto, Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong'o, and Angelina Jolie.
Also visible in the famous photo were Meryl Streep, Ellen DeGeneres, Peter Nyong'o, and Cooper himself.
At the time, the image captured a moment that felt like the peak of Hollywood glamour.
But looking back more than a decade later, the reputations of several celebrities in that image have changed significantly.
A number of them have faced controversy or accusations that led some people to say they had been “canceled.”
Jared Leto
Some critics have argued that Jared Leto has faced backlash in recent years following sexual impropriety allegations.
Last year, nine women came forward and accused the actor of inappropriate behavior.
A report released in June described the alleged conduct as 'predatory, terrifying and unacceptable', according to reporting from The Guardian.
Some of the individuals who made accusations claimed they had been teenagers at the time of the alleged incidents.
One accuser, model Laura La Rue, stated in the report that Leto had flirted with her when she was sixteen years old while he was thirty-six.
According to her account, the two continued communicating through email messages.
La Rue later said she visited the actor’s home in April 2009.
Leto responded to the allegations and denied them.
A representative speaking on behalf of the Thirty Seconds to Mars musician said: "All of the allegations are expressly denied."
Regarding La Rue’s claims, the representative also stated that their 'communications contain nothing sexual or inappropriate'.
Ellen DeGeneres
Ellen DeGeneres experienced a major shift in public perception after a series of reports about the workplace environment on her talk show.
The controversy began in 2020 following a BuzzFeed investigation into the internal culture of The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
The program had been extremely popular and ran for nineteen seasons.
However, it ended in May 2022 after accusations of racism, sexual misconduct, and intimidation were made against three executive producers working behind the scenes.
One former African American employee told BuzzFeed that she experienced several racist comments during her time working on the show.
It is important to note that those remarks were not attributed directly to DeGeneres herself.
However, another former employee commented on the situation and said: "If she wants to have her own show and have her name on the show title, she needs to be more involved to see what's going on."
DeGeneres later spoke publicly about the controversy and her feelings about how the situation unfolded.
She suggested that the backlash may have been linked to the show’s well-known message to 'be kind'.
According to The Guardian, DeGeneres also said she struggled during the scandal and had a 'hard time'.
She added: "I'm making jokes about what happened to me, but it was devastating, really. It took a long time for me to want to do anything again."
Kevin Spacey
In 2017 Kevin Spacey was removed from his lead role in the Netflix series House of Cards.
The decision followed accusations from actor Anthony Rapp, who claimed that Spacey had sexually assaulted him when he was a teenager.
Spacey denied the allegation.
He was later charged with four counts of sexual assault involving three different men.
At the time, the actor maintained that he believed he would be able to prove his innocence and described the accusations as 'madness'.
In 2023 Spacey was found not guilty in a high-profile court case.
He was also acquitted of several other charges of a similar nature in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
Other legal claims were dropped during the process.
Rapp’s lawsuit against Spacey was dismissed after a jury unanimously decided that the actor had not molested him.
Despite that outcome, Spacey is expected to return to court again later this year to face civil claims of sexual assault from three men, which he denies.
Brad Pitt — according to some
Brad Pitt is the final celebrity from the photo who some people argue has faced attempts at cancellation.
The controversy relates to claims made by his former wife Angelina Jolie.
Jolie has alleged that Pitt was physically abusive toward her during a private flight from France to California.
She says the incident took place in front of their children.
The Tomb Raider actor reportedly filed for divorce shortly after the alleged incident.
She also claims that on September 14, 2016, Pitt assaulted their children during the same flight.
At the time the children were between eight and fifteen years old.
Pitt has strongly denied the allegations and disputes that he assaulted anyone during the flight.
His attorney Anne Kiley issued a statement responding to the claims.
The statement read: "Brad has owned everything he's responsible for from day one—unlike the other side—but he's not going to own anything he didn't do."
"He has been on the receiving end of every type of personal attack and misrepresentation."
"Thankfully, the various public authorities the other side has tried to use against him over the past six years have made their own independent decisions."
"Brad will continue to respond in court as he has consistently done."
After court documents related to the case circulated on social media platform X, many users began debating the actor’s reputation.
Some users argued that Pitt should be canceled.
One person wrote: "Time to cancel Brad Pitt."
Another user responded by saying: "Nobody can cancel Brad Pitt, it's not possible."
Pitt and Jolie eventually finalized their divorce in December 2024.
The legal process lasted eight years and involved multiple disputes over finances, property, and custody.
