Terrifying Video Shows Why Falling Overboard Can Be A Deadly Mistake
Across the world, countless people suffer from Thalassophobia, which is a fear of deep bodies of water, like the vast and mysterious ocean.
For some, it's the sheer size of the ocean that makes them uneasy. For others, it’s the thought of what could be swimming beneath the waves that really stirs up fear.
But even if you’ve never been afraid of the ocean before, a creepy TikTok video might just change your mind. Some viewers are now calling the sea a flat-out ‘death trap’ after watching it.
The clip was posted by TikTok user @thetrevorlopez in 2023 and shows someone pouring what looks like a drink from a cup into the ocean while standing on an oil rig or field platform.
It came with a chilling caption that read ‘Welcome to the deep blue death trap’. And what happens next sent shivers down viewers' spines. You can check out the eerie footage below:
Within just a few seconds of the liquid hitting the ocean, a huge swarm of fish appears, seemingly out of nowhere, darting toward the spot.
People on TikTok were quick to point out that the fish likely rushed to the scene because they thought food had entered the water, and they reacted instinctively.
Other viewers used this as a reminder that jumping into open water might not be as safe as it seems.
"This is exactly what I think of every time I hear about someone jumping off a cruise ship," one commenter pointed out.
"All I can think about is that dude who jumped in and his friends just watched him," another chimed in.
The original poster replied by saying: "I'll jump in when I get off one day and let ya'll know how it goes. The fish aren't scary but the sharks that are deeper are."
Lately, similar videos have surfaced online showing fish going into a frenzy whenever something edible hits the ocean.
One example that caught a lot of attention was a viral Reddit post from the OddlySatisfying subreddit.
It showed someone tossing an apple into the sea from an oil platform.
In no time at all, an entire school of fish swarmed the apple, circling it before quickly devouring it and swimming away.
It was a clear demonstration of just how packed with life the waters below really are.
One Redditor explained: "These fish are probably waiting for food items to be dropped."
"The camera is set up to record a phenomenon that had been observed before so we can guess the workers and fish already have a bit of a relationship going."
"The fish are primed to expect and react to the apple. Also, it's probably easier to see items falling from the sky from beneath a couple of feet of water than we estimate it to be; they would appear as silhouettes against a bright background."
Pretty wild when you stop to think about it, right?
