A pastor from the US was left shocked after learning that all this time his gut has been brewing its own alcohol every time he eats carbs because of the rare condition he is suffering from.

Though hearing it, it seems like an ideal condition but in reality, it is much worse than it sounds!

Adam Stump suffers from auto-brewery syndrome (ABS) and it would lead him to become a very drunk person with no control over his mood and turning into an aggressive person that too without touching alcohol.

The 40-year old shares that he would often have slurred speech and would blackout. His wife Jana Stump, 37, was convinced that her husband was an alcoholic.

It was much later that Jana realized that something was wrong with her husband when breathalyzers showed Adam was over the legal driving limit, despite spending the entire day together without drinking.

This led to one trip after another to different doctors, where many doctors assumed that Adam was secretly alcoholic. Later, after much struggle, it was discovered that he had been suffering from ABS.

The dad-of-four is now following a treatment plan and takes antibiotics to manage his condition.

Adam, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, said: "At the start, Jana didn't believe I hadn't been drinking. She thought I was sneaking it somewhere. I had to convince her that I hadn't been drinking.

"It was terrible for her to think that I was living a double life. When I was diagnosed, she collapsed and said she couldn't take any more stress.

"I would slur my speech, black out and walk around talking but not remember any of it. I was quite belligerent and combative. I didn't hurt anyone but once I threw the dining room table and had to get a friend round to calm me down.

"There were a few times where my wife would be looking for me and I'd be in strange places like the garden or laying on the basement floor with no recollection of how I got there."

He added: "I wasn't a very pleasant person to be around. I felt like I was going to snap.

"Some people can be funny when they're drunk but that isn't what auto-brewery syndrome is. It's a personality changer. It's like having a hangover and being drunk at the same time."

When Jana found that her husband was not lying, she suspected he may have auto-brewery syndrome after researching the symptoms.

After undergoing testing, doctors revealed Adam had ABS in February 2021 and began treatment in March.

Following his treatment plan, Adam is forced to give up almost all kinds of carbs and lives on a diet of meat, cheese, and eggs.

The hardest part is the withdrawal symptoms that include nausea, diarrhea, and stomach cramps - which meant Adam was forced to take three months off work.

He concluded: "I've got to the point where I've realised it's better to be healthy so it doesn't bother me to see people eating and drinking. It's worth it to be a husband and father."
