This is the latest riddle/brain teaser to be making its way around the internet. Take a look for yourself and see if you can get the answer. Just remember you can't solve this simply by running left-to-right - you've got to use the order of operations known as PEMDAS (parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction). Make your old middle school math teacher proud!
Take a look and see if you can get it.
There's a new math equation that's going viral.
People are going nuts because they can't figure out the answer.
It looks like such a simple equation.
Then again, maybe it's too easy. We can feel your self-doubt.
OK, let's start with the first line.
1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 11 + 1 + 1 = 17
This is where it gets difficult.
On the second line, we have 1 + 11 + 1 x 0 + 1. Well 1 + 11 + 1 = 13. Then we multiply that by 0 to equal 0, leaving us with 0 + 1, right?
Actually, no.
Remember the PEMDAS rule?
Don't worry, we forgot about PEMDAS, too.
Let's refresh our memory.
PEMDAS is the order in which you solve an equation.
When looking at a math problem, you must first solve any equation in parenthesis, followed by exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction, hence the acronym PEMDAS.
You might recognize PEMDAS by another phrase.
Our teachers used to say we would remember it easier if we thought of the acronym as Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally.
Now let's get back to the equation.
If you begin by multiplying 1 and 0, which results in 0, you can then add the rest of the digits up to equal 30.
That wasn't so bad, eh?
Now you can reward yourself with a hard-earned nap.
