The clip features a unique type of eye surgery that’s only used when other options aren't viable, and it includes a surprising twist.
People Left 'Terrified' After Watching 'Creepy' Video Showing How Eye Surgery Is Done
The video showcases a unique and extraordinary surgical procedure on the eye that includes an entirely unexpected stage.
Over the years, surgery has advanced tremendously, and eye surgery, in particular, has become one of the most delicate and intricate procedures available.
Some types of eye surgeries have become quite common, with many people undergoing these operations.
For instance, cataract removal has become a fairly routine procedure for surgeons specializing in eye care. This does not mean it is any less significant, though.
Before the advent of cataract removal surgery, having a cataract could lead to severe vision impairment or even complete blindness in extreme cases.
Nowadays, a procedure that takes only about 30 to 45 minutes can completely eliminate this risk.
However, it is important to note that this life-changing procedure is not readily available in some countries.
The eye surgery highlighted in the video is far more complex than a routine cataract removal.
It involves some elements that are not just unexpected but almost unbelievable. This intricate procedure is called an osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis.
Those familiar with Ancient Greek might guess from the 'odonto' part of the name that this surgery involves teeth. Remarkably, they would be correct.
This groundbreaking procedure was first pioneered in Italy during the 1960s.
It is only attempted in very extreme cases when all other treatment options have been exhausted.
So, what exactly does this procedure involve? To begin with, a healthy tooth is extracted from the patient's mouth.
This tooth is then fashioned into a structure with a small hole in the middle.
Additionally, the inner surface of the eyelids, the corneal surface, and any scar tissue are removed from the eye.
The structure made from the tooth is then implanted into the patient’s cheek, where it remains for around four months.
This period allows the tooth to grow a new blood supply. Once the structure is ready, it is removed from the cheek and implanted into the prepared eye.
When a video of this astonishing procedure was shared on Reddit, it sparked a wave of disbelief and amazement.
One user commented, "Who even thinks to try this? Amazing and creepy at the same time," while another wrote, "This is out of a horror movie."
A third user joked, "A tooth for an eye, something something, now not blind?"
As bizarre as it sounds, there is actually a documented instance where this procedure was successfully carried out.
In 2009, the Telegraph reported that Martin Jones, a builder from the UK, regained his sight after undergoing the surgery following an accident that left him blind.
Jones shared his experience with the outlet, saying, "When I first heard about the technique, I couldn't believe it. I don't think many people can."
"My friends just don't believe me. They think I'm pulling their leg or have just made it up."
He continued, "But when I take my glasses off, they say 'oh my God,' because my eye looks like something out of a sci-fi movie. They're just amazed at it."
