'I found out she was a compulsive liar and lied about almost everything I knew about her, from big to small things: her grandparents dying to what she had for lunch the other day.

'I also lent her a lot of money for her hardships - surprise, all lies - and found out she spent them on shopping sprees and other leisure activities[sic].'

Competitiveness was the wedge that drove two other close friends apart.

I met my friend in 2008 and he picked up smoking weed in 2010 and just... Smoked himself stupid over the following years.

I've never seen that happen to anyone else. He became insufferable to be around so I called it quits [sic]'.

One user had a very controlling and unkind friend who she cut out of her life.

'She was living vicariously through me, and was super controlling of me whenever I went to visit her (she moved away to study).

'When I met my boyfriend, she got bizarrely super jealous - demanding of my time, and insulting of my boyfriend. I mean, he was about 115lbs and she called him fat, and reckoned it wasn't acceptable that he's a cat person.

'The next time we met when she was in my area, we had just got engaged. Twenty minutes into the meal, she says 'Is that your ring, then?'

I showed it to her (...) She took one look and sneered "Where's the rock?!". And that's the point at which it was over.'

Romance had caused the end of lots of friendships, but in different ways. Yes, senior year of high school my best friend of 2 years, the dude I hung out with every day, slept with my then girlfriend. Broke up with him, never spoke a word ever since [sic]'.

Another user had a friend who demanded that she condone her affair.

The girl who was my best friend in college went crazy on me when I refused to agree that her cheating on her husband was ok. We 'broke up' and her husband and I have been platonic besties ever since!'

Romantic jealously caused a rift between some platonic friends, to the extent that their friendships had to end.

'My best friend since 4th grade. She was always 'smarter' than me - she's several math classes above me (and I'm a year ahead of my grade level) and prides herself on being a better writer.'

As soon as the poster begins to do well their friend started to become spiteful.

'When we were younger her obsessive need to be the best all the time wasn't so bad but as we got older and I started doing well in writing competitions she suddenly became very cold and constantly put me down.'

'My best friend (guy) and I (girl) parted ways in college when our respective relationship partners successfully poisoned our friendship.

'Really sucked. Years later, those relationships were done and we managed to rebuild our friendship - with the support of new partners who weren't threatened by it. All good times again.'

Unrequited love is a sure fire way to end a friendship.

'They caught feelings for me that I didn't reciprocate. At first I suggested some distance - thought they were just confused because they recently broke up with their gf - but they were way too clingy it was weird.

'Things turned really nasty due to jealousy and I decided it'd be for the best for us to stop being friends altogether. F*** being treated like s*** just because I don't feel the same way.'

Unfortunately, for one class was the reason their friendship came to an end.

Kind of. I was (am) lower middle class, she was upper middle class, but she treated me as her "designated poor friend".

'She would show me off to her friends and family like I was some little feral child she was trying to civilize. Eventually, I got tired of it. As soon as high school ended, we went from talking every single day to not speaking at all. I don't really miss it.'
