The year 1964 might seem like a distant memory to many, and it's interesting to reflect on the era, especially considering the cinematic landscape at the time.

One of the standout film franchises of that period was none other than James Bond.

In 1964, audiences around the globe were spellbound by Ian Fleming's legendary spy, brought to life on screen by Sean Connery.

This iconic character found himself embroiled in a high-stakes confrontation with the infamous gold smuggler Auric Goldfinger, a role masterfully portrayed by Gert Fröbe, in the fittingly named blockbuster, "Goldfinger."

While it's always a treat to revisit the origins of the James Bond series, lately, fans have been focusing their attention on actor Richard Vernon and his portrayal of Colonel Smithers.

The fascination isn't rooted in the belief that Vernon delivered a performance that was out of this world.

Instead, people are astounded by how old he appeared for his age during the filming of "Goldfinger."

Despite being just 39 years old at the time, many observers are convinced that Vernon seemed considerably older.

A picture of Richard Vernon from "Goldfinger" has been creating quite a stir on various social media sites.

It showcases his gray hair and noticeable wrinkles, presenting a stark difference when compared to the much younger-looking actors of today who are around 40 years old, such as Chris Hemsworth, Henry Cavill, Jonah Hill, Jesse Eisenberg, and Adam Driver.

It's clear that perceptions and realities of aging have evolved over the years, sparking lively discussions and exchanges of views online.

One user humorously speculated on X, "People aged differently back then. Probably smoked 3 packs and drank half a litre of Whiskey daily as well,"

While another expressed disbelief, stating, "That is completely absurd."

"Didn't believe it until I looked it up! These men were born 5 years apart," another said, sharing an image of Vernon and James Bond actor Sean Connery.

Images of the two actors have been shared, prompting comments of astonishment and curiosity about the aging process in the 1960s.

Reddit has seen its fair share of surprised reactions, with numerous users admitting they would have guessed Vernon to be in his late 50s or early 60s.

"Well, early 60s is honestly what I would have guessed. But he doesn't look 39. I guess the years weren't kind to him," remarked one Reddit user.

Another mused about the lifestyle choices of the era, "He's a good 7 years younger than Jared Leto. What the hell did people do in the 60s that made them age so fast?"

Richard Vernon's legacy, however, goes beyond the astonishment over his appearance.

He passed away on December 4, 1997, due to complications from Parkinson's disease.
