Suicide, Drugs and Rock & Roll

Before she was the award-winning actress that we've grown to love, Drew Barrymore was the poster child for rebellious, celebrity kids. With a father as an actor, she's had an interesting childhood, to say the least. Like father, like daughter, Drew battled with addiction and mental issues. On the brink of her success, Drew was a very dark child who dabbled in drugs, alcohol and suicide all before the age of 15.

Though she has prevailed, take a look back on her troubled life

Studio 54

Back in the 70s and the 80s, Studio 54 was the IT spot for Hollywood's most elite. The world-famous New York nightclub was the scene of stars like Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Andy Warhol, Elton John and a very young Drew Barrymore. Not sure how she got in, but she was described as a regular.

Drugs and Alcohol

She began smoking cigarettes at nine years old and drinking alcohol at 11. By the time she was 12, she had graduated to smoking marijuana. And at 13, she started snorting cocaine. By 14 years old, Drew went to rehab and spent 18 months in a mental institution.

Suicide Attempt

She's tried to commit suicide on numerous occasions. Once at 14 and another years later where she slit her wrists with a butcher knife.

Attempting to commit suicide at 14 landed her back in rehab after her first visit. Following her stint in rehab, she stayed with singer David Crosby and his wife. The guitarist felt that Drew needed to be around people who were committed to staying sober. The next year she was able to move into her own place after filing a petition for juvenile emancipation.

Back to Rehab

Soon after she lived on her own, she headed back to rehab following a drunken incident with her mom. In 1988, she confronted her mother after a night of heavy drinking. The confrontation led to Drew throwing dishes and glasses and breaking them until her mother left. Her friend and friend's mother then came and took Drew to rehab where she stayed for 12 days.

She had more bouts with drugs which sent her back and forth to rehab before she became clean for six months in 1989.

Movies to Magazines

By the time she was 17, she brought her wild behavior to the mainstream. At 17, she played a teenage seductress in Poison Ivy (1992). She then appeared in Seventeen Magazine. That same year, she appeared nude on the cover of Interview magazine as well as inside the magazine spread.

Playboy Magazine

At 19, Drew posed for the January 1995 issue of Playboy. Her godfather and director of her second movie when she was a child, E.T. the Extraterrestrial, gave her a quilt for her 20th birthday. In the box with the quilt were altered Playboy images of Drew covered in clothes with a note that read "Cover yourself up."

During an appearance on Late Show with David Letterman, Drew climbed onto his desk and flashed her boobs in his face with her back towards the camera.
