At a subsequent press conference, Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong informed the media that responding officers discovered a 12-year-old fleeing away from the site while also spotting a 13-year-old with a gunshot wound. Shortly after, the alleged shooter was captured.

The incident happened while the school day was coming to a close in the afternoon.

Police officials have not yet disclosed the suspect's name or whether they were a student at the institution. The shooting's weapon has been found.

The person is in stable condition, according to NBC News.

When parents tried to pick up their children after learning of the incident, traffic in the neighborhood was backed up as the school, which has kids in sixth through twelfth grade, was evacuated.

Police, Alameda County sheriff's deputies, students, staff members, and parents were all gathered outside the school, as seen on camera from the SkyFOX chopper.

After yet another violent weekend in Oakland, the shooting occurs. According to NBC News, Chief Armstrong described this particular occurrence as a parent's worst fear after reporting six killings in the previous four days.

"No parent wants to send their kid to school and get a call they’ve been shot. The worst thing you can hear as a parent," he said. "Far too many guns on our streets."

"It saddens me to think a kid would bring a gun to school," he added. "No parent wants to send their kids to school in the day and then be called saying, 'Your kid’s been shot.' It’s the worst call you can get."

Libby Schaaf, the mayor of Oakland, posted a statement on her social media pages about the incident, calling it "heartbreaking and unacceptable."

"School should be the safest place for our kids. As a mother and a mayor, I’m relieved the young victim at Madison is in stable condition + a suspect apprehended. The increased level of gun violence in our country + our city is heartbreaking and unacceptable," she wrote.

She continued her statement in a follow-up tweet, writing: "Let me be clear: We will hold accountable those who cause harm to Oakland, and we will come together to heal from these traumatic events."
