Police Departments Are Putting This Controversial Message On Their Cars
#1 "In God We Trust"
The Cleveland, Texas Police Department recently received a very unique donation. Good Promotions, a local business, donated "In God We Trust" stickers which will be put on every patrol car. The decals have already been approved by the Police Chief Rex Evans, who considers the message empowering and patriotic.
#2 Other departments are also doing it
He thinks there's nothing wrong with the stickers, and mentioned that other departments have been doing the same: "Katy Fire Department just put the motto on all its fire trucks. A lot of agencies are doing this these days. The (attorney general) ruled that the motto of our nation is ‘In God We Trust', so how could it be wrong?"
#3 Doesn't violate the First Amendment
And even if the decals are raising a lot of questions, the stickers have already been ruled constitutional. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton issued a statement explaining why the motto doesn't violate the First Amendment.
#4 Texas Attorney General's view
This is what he had to say about the controversy: "A court is likely to conclude that a law enforcement department's display of the national motto, ‘In God We Trust,' on its patrol vehicles is permissible under the Establishment Clause of the United States Constitution."
#5 Liberty County Sheriff
And the heads of other police departments are giving the decals their ‘OK'. Liberty County Sheriff Bobby Rader announced that his patrol cars will have the slogan placed on them in the coming weeks.
