A Cop Who Saved Girl From Fire 18 Years Ago Just Watched Her Graduate From College. Josibel Apontel's graduation ceremony was all kinds of special. It was attended not only by her family but also by the man who saved her life 18 years ago!
This Man is a police officer in a relatively low-key Northern, NJ town, but it seems that no matter how pleasant a place looks, serious sh*t goes down on a daily basis. I've heard some horror stories. Chasing down a completely sober man who knifed a 12-year-old boy. Getting a call in the middle of the night when a crackhead accidentally rolled over on their baby in the middle of the night, suffocating it dead, performing CPR on the kid, watching it's rib cage rise from the air as its arms and head hang lifelessly.

Aponte was a 5-year-old when the apartment where she stayed erupted in fire. It was police officer Peter Getz who rescued Aponte from the smokey building which was completely up in flames. Getz caught hold of the girl and performed CPR on her as she had stopped breathing. He then took her to the hospital where Aponte was operated and was later out of danger.
Sadly, Getz couldn't save her uncle who passed away from the injuries he sustained in the fire. A picture was taken of Getz rescuing Aponte, which he kept on his desk till he retired. The officer's children were just a couple of years older than Aponte during the time of the fire incident, and she reminded him of his kids.
After the incident, the officer followed up on Aponte's progress. He regularly met her and also kept a watch on her school progress.

On Tuesday, Aponte graduated magna cum laude from Eastern Connecticut State University with a bachelor's degree in accounting. She invited officer Getz to attend the ceremony and he did! "I almost died, but I was given a second chance at life," Aponte told the Hartford Courant. "And it was because of Peter and all the authorities, everyone who came to help that day. I wanted to share my graduation with everyone who's important to me, who have been there for me, and who helped me through tough times," she said.
It was a moment of joy to see Aponte receive her degree in front of the man who saved her life.

Here he is seated with Josibelk Aponte after her college graduation. Getz rescued Josibel when she was 5 years old, after a brutal fire ripped through a Connecticut apartment, killing one of her relatives.
Kudos to such Officers! We salute you Sir!
