The Pirates of the Caribbean star is suing his ex-wife for a 2018 Washington Post op-ed in which she claimed she was a victim of physical and emotional abuse. Even though Heard never addressed Depp by name, Depp claims the article harmed his reputation and career.
PR Expert Claims Johnny Depp's Defamation Trial Against Amber Heard Could Revive His Career
He was dropped from both the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean and Fantastic Beasts' sequel franchises.
However, Juda Engelmayer, a crisis public relations expert and the founder of HeraldPR, feels the defamation action is an opportunity for the Hollywood actor to resurrect his career.
Depp is unlikely to be cast in 'family-friendly' pictures in the future, according to Engelmayer, but he could make a comeback by pursuing independent filmmaking.
"I think his role will be different," she said. "He'll be cast in independent films or films where he is maybe the bad guy, a criminal, a mobster.”
"Someone who at first is not a likable guy, not a fun guy, but someone who's the bad guy."
Well, following the trial, we can't envision him playing Father Christmas.
Engelmayer, who has also depicted troubling famous people such as Harvey Weinstein, Paula Deen, and faux heiress Anna Sorokin, said that Depp’s return to form could mirror Mel Gibson’s.
After making a series of racist and homophobic remarks, the actor's career suffered for several years.
Gibson's cinematic career has since been revived, with roles in films such as Hacksaw Ridge and Daddy's Home 2.
Depp, according to Engelmayer, may make a similar comeback because the trial portrays him as 'charming and more lovely.'
"Johnny Depp is showing studios and showing publicists that he can win audiences over," she said.
"That's the turning point of whether or not it's going to turn on Johnny Depp.”
"This is not a criminal trial, it's a civil trial.”
"So in the end, he wins even if the jury believes him or doesn't believe him, awards him money or just awards him a symbolic win, or even if he loses completely."
After a week off, the trial is due to resume this week.
Amber Heard will testify again, and it's expected that she will give more details regarding her relationship with Johnny Depp.
Johnny Depp's ex-girlfriend actor Ellen Barkin and Heard's sister, Whitney, will both testify in court.
