According to Bass, Sydney was allegedly forced to “get on her hands and knees” to clean up popcorn spilled by their young daughter in the plane aisle.

Social media has erupted in outrage over Anthony Bass’s tweet, with many expressing sympathy for his family and demanding better treatment of passengers, particularly those with young children.

The incident has reignited an ongoing debate about airlines’ responsibilities when it comes to ensuring the comfort and safety of their passengers.

While some argue that it is the airline’s responsibility to clean up any mess on the plane, others suggest that parents should take responsibility for their children’s actions.

Bass, who pitches for to Toronto Blue Jays, had tweeted:

“The flight attendant @united just made my 22 week pregnant wife traveling with a 5 year old and 2 year old get on her hands and knees to pick up the popcorn mess by my youngest daughter. Are you kidding me?!?!”

Anthony’s tweet and accompanying photo of the “popcorn mess” quickly sparked a debate online, with opinions sharply divided over who was responsible for cleaning up the spill.

Some sympathized with the Bass family, arguing that it was unreasonable to expect a 22-week pregnant mother to clean up after her children and calling for better treatment of passengers by airlines.

Others, however, accused the family of entitlement and suggested that they were trying to shift responsibility to the airline.

The debate quickly became heated, with each side fiercely arguing their perspective. However, some pointed out that the severity of the mess was not the issue but rather the larger question of how airlines treat their passengers.

“I think it’s disgusting that the stewardess made a pregnant woman clean up a mess,” tweeted one follower.

“If they’re going to supply popcorn on the airplane be ready for messes to clean up if you don’t like it, don’t serve popcorn.”

On the other end of the spectrum, one Twitter user fired back at Bass: “Just because you’re rich doesn’t mean everyone is your servant. I hope this helps.”

A second sarcastically wrote: “Ohh no your wife had to clean up after the mess your kids made lol what a Greek tragedy.”

Another user asked: “Genuinely curious who should clean up the mess your 2 year old made? As a parent of three kids I am the one responsible for them.”

When Anthony replied: “The cleaning crew they hire!”, followers were quick to let him know that, a) planes don’t always have time for a thorough clean from a team after every flight, and b) flight attendants are there for safety, not for cleaning.

The Bass family was not alone in their frustration with the incident on the United Airlines flight. Sydney’s sister, Jessie James Decker, took to Instagram to express her own complaints about the experience.

“My sister @sydneyraebass just texted me from her flight on @united,” Jessie wrote in an Instagram Story that has since expired.

“As you know, she is five months pregnant, high-risk, and also traveling alone with her two small children.

“Blaire accidentally spilled some popcorn in the aisle, and the flight attendant came up to Sydney with a trash bag and a wet wipe, telling her the captain wants Syd to clean up every drop.

“My poor sister is on her hands and knees, crying in the aisle, completely humiliated and exhausted, with her children while everyone else watched. Way to go, United.”

Mum-of-three Decker continued: “You guys, this whole time I’m thinking that this popcorn is something Sydney just picked up at the little newsstand. Sydney had two flights, and United, on the first flight, they gave them both popcorn.

The airline replied to Bass’ tweet with a post saying it ‘understood his concern’, adding: “We'd like to look into this. When you have a moment, please DM your wife's confirmation number along with any additional details regarding her interaction with this crew member."

The baseball player told his 29,400 followers that United had taken action following the incident, saying: "United Airlines is taking care of matters with the flight attendant internally."
