Man in tough predicament when pregnant wife is suddenly terrified of the family dog. She’s afraid the great dane will jump on her and harm the baby.
Wife Says Husband Is Prioritizing The Dog Over Her Pregnancy After He Refuses To Get Rid Of It And Break His Son’s Heart
Pets and babies can have the most magical relationship if they get along well. In fact, they can even start sensing when their owner is pregnant and start being gentler and more protective of them. For this new mum-to-be however, it triggered a fear that the dog would accidentally harm her baby.
She took the issue to her husband who wasn't quite on her side.
The husband, henceforth referred to as OP said that they got the family dog when their son was eight and that his son loved the dog.
So far, there seemed to be no incidents that would have rung alarm bells but now that his wife was 12 weeks pregnant, she had developed discomfort being around it.
She would cover her stomach and jolt when he made sudden moves. Her fear grew to the point that she finally asked her husband to rehome the dog.
She revealed that she was afraid of the Great Dane jumping on her and accidentally harming the baby.
OP said that the dog was trained not to jump on people and felt like there wasn't much likelihood of that happening.
She said that they couldn't be sure that the dog wouldn't jump on her and that her anxiety had reached a point that it was harmful to her.
OP refused to budge and said that his son had gotten the dog after his mother had died and that taking the dog away would trigger that trauma.
She said that choosing the dog meant he was prioritizing it over her pregnancy. OP said that he was in a bind and did not know what to do considering how close his son was to the dog.
OP finally made an update sometime later.
He said that they did some research regarding the fear that she had developed and discovered this was a rather common thing. He shared those stories with her and she felt reassured that she wasn't alone in feeling that way.
He further added that they had already started training the dog how to behave around babies and that he had also borrowed a baby (?!) from his coworkers for an evening.
They also looked for treatment options for his wife and she had started going to therapy to discuss her fears. She still wanted some distance between her and the dog.
This meant that the dog was spending more time in his son's bedroom and things had started settling since then.
Commenters were happy for OP after reading this update and were happy to have read a positive turn of events.
Other users were just as baffled as us that they simply borrowed a baby to train their dog.
Another commenter said that apparently this was far more common than we think since parents were happy to get a free evening to themselves with free babysitting.
