Princess Diana's tragic 1997 car accident in Paris, her final words, and the aftermath have left a lasting impact. Despite the passage of 25 years, her death continues to evoke deep emotion, particularly among the British public and her loved ones.
Princess Diana’s Tragic Final Words Revealed To The Public By Firefighter On Scene
Princess Diana passed away in a tragic car accident in France in 1997, and the British public has been troubled by her last words ever since.
Loved by all, Diana was just 36 years old when she passed away, but her compassionate spirit and willingness to assist those in need have made her the nation's "People's Princess."
There is still much uncertainty about what might have happened on that fatal day, even though it has been 25 years since the tragedy.
What is known is that on August 31, Diana was in Paris and was traveling in a car with her boyfriend Dodi Fayed.
Diana's driver and Dodi's bodyguard were also in the car with the couple, but things took a swift turn when nine journalists chased the princess via the Pont de l'Alma underpass.
Henri Paul, the driver, reportedly lost control of the car and slammed into a column in the underpass, killing Dodi and himself almost immediately while seriously injuring Diana and her bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones.
Along with emergency personnel, firefighters arrived at the scene to assess whether they could rescue the injured and move them to a hospital.
Firefighter Xavier Gourmelon recorded the princess's last remarks at that point.
The French native discussed what she said to him with Good Morning Britain on the 20th anniversary of her passing.
He revealed that no one knew who was in the crash or recognized the princess when he and his team arrived on the scene.
Gourmelon reported that she glanced at him and exclaimed, "Oh my God, what's happened?"
He continued by saying that she had been unconscious when he had first approached.
She first appeared "agitated," according to the ex-firefighter, before losing consciousness once more.
He said: “I tried to calm her down and tell her we’d look after her, and she fell into a coma again.”
He described how things went south after they pulled her out of the car wreck.
He explained: “At that moment, the doctor said she was in cardiac arrest. So, we gave her CPR and after 20 seconds, she regained consciousness, and we transferred her to the ambulance.”
He believed she would fully recover once she got to the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris, noting that all he could see were injuries to her shoulder and that she had no blood on her.
However, the princess passed away at four in the morning following a second heart arrest that the doctors were unable to revive.
The news of Diana's passing reached Buckingham Palace and her ex-husband's ears, who was reportedly "ashen and trembling" upon hearing it, according to Christopher Andersen in King: The Life of Charles III.
Anderson said: "He let out a cry of pain that was so spontaneous and came from the heart. Palace staff rushed over to Charles' room and found him collapsed in an armchair, weeping uncontrollably."
