Ibrahim Yucel, a long-time smoker, went to great lengths to quit his two-decade habit
Ever tried to quit smoking? Well, one man took it to the next level, locking his head in a cage to stop himself from lighting up. Wild, right?
For those who have struggled to quit or even just thought about it, going as far as trapping your head inside a cage sounds way out there.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco kills around eight million people worldwide each year.
Of these deaths, seven million are active smokers, while an additional 1.2 million people lose their lives from second-hand smoke exposure.
Determined to break his addiction, Ibrahim Yucel did what most would never even imagine.
He created a cage for his head and handed his wife the only key.
This all took place in 2013 in the town of Kütahya, Turkey.
According to Ary News, Yucel was motivated by the loss of his father, who had passed away from lung cancer after years of smoking.
Yucel himself was smoking two packs a day and had been for over twenty years, leaving him firmly hooked on cigarettes.
So, he decided to try a solution that was totally outside the box.
Literally—by locking his head inside one.
After looking at motorcycle helmets, he thought he could use them as inspiration for his unusual plan.
He then got 130 feet of copper wire and carefully crafted a cage that could lock securely.
Once he was done, he locked himself in and gave the key to his wife so he could only be freed at mealtimes.
The tiny gaps in the wire allowed him to drink water through a straw but kept cigarettes out, preventing him from smoking.
However, it’s unclear if his unique strategy worked, as there isn’t much information on Yucel and his family since he first donned the cage.
The story later popped up on Reddit, where users had a lot to say about the cage idea, debating whether it was genius or just plain strange.
One person commented: "You know how they tell children not to put plastic bags over their heads? Big Tobacco propaganda."
Another joked about the inconvenience: "The nose itch would get me..."
Someone even suggested how he could still smoke through the device: "He can stick a straw in a cigarette butt and smoke from the straw."
One user expressed confusion: "There HAS TO BE a better way of doing this."
Another commenter quipped: "Hangs around the smoking area asking people to breathe on him."
With so many ways to quit smoking—like patches, gums, inhalers, and vapes—maybe a head cage could be the next addition to the anti-smoking toolkit.
