Facebook's "real name" policy has prompted the social media site to block countless minorities whose names don't fit a white, Euro-centric naming pattern. Though they claim to be working on a solution, here are some REAL users who have been blocked from using the social network because of their names.
#1 Facebook's Real Name Policy Still Flawed
When a man named Phuc Dat Bich posted a photo of his passport online, he wasn't looking to become a viral sensation. He just wanted Facebook to recognize that he wasn't trying to use a fake name to set up a social media account. The company then began to question it's "real name" policy that had been in place since the platforms inception. They even hired consultants from various origins, races, and religions to help with their new policy setup.
#2 Phuc Dat Bich Was Trying To Shine Light On The Racism At FB
However... Phuc Dat Bich was found to be an imposter, actually from Vietnam. His stunt though, has highlighted the problems experienced by people whose names are deemed too strange for Facebook. Many people have been denied accounts because of their names. Simply because the social network doesn't believe their name is genuine. many are calling it an act of blatant racism.
#3 They Say The Policy Is Being Changed But People Are Still Being Flagged And Deleted
The company has promised to do away with its policy, but people are still getting flagged... and it's not just names that sound like curse words that have gotten people banned from the social media site. Here are just a few of those names that are unable to use the network with their REAL name.
#4 Robin Kills The Enemy & Dana Lone Elk
Native Americans reportedly get a particularly raw deal on the social network, which sometimes does not believe names that they are given at birth are actual "real names." Robin Kills The Enemy is one such name refused. Ms Kills The Enemy, from the Sioux Rosebud reservation in South Dakota, was refused an account, along with several other people from similar backgrounds.
When Dana Lone Hill changed her last name from her mother's maiden name, Lone Hill, to her father's last name, Lone Elk, she was banned from using her account. A member of the Oglala Lakota Sioux tribe, she had to send various forms of ID to prove who she really is.
#5 Isis
What a time to be named Isis.. but that is this girls real name. She was named after the Egyptian Goddess of the Sky, not the terrorist group.
#6 Isis Anchalee
Ms Isis Anchalee has the same name as the barbaric terror group. And, was flagged for a ban by the computer system.
She claimed Facebook closed her account and refused to open it again, even though Isis sent her passport over. She has posted her story over and over on Twitter and on network news shows. Still, FB has not allowed her to open her account.
#7 Something Long And Complicated
Doesn't sound real? Well, it is. William Wood changed his name legally to Something Long and Complicated, and when Facebook had a problem with that, he fought to get his page reinstated. Facebook thought this stunt was preposterous and locked him out of his account.
#8 Kate Middleton
Healthcare assistant Kate Middleton, 29, has been locked out of the social network site because they claimed she had registered under a fake name.
Ironically, Miss Middleton's partner Jonathan Ross has not been accused of being a fake, despite sharing his name with the television presenter on BBC.
#9 Zip
Yes, her name is ZIP. And this just proves that Zuckerberg doesn't know zip.
Although she WORKS at Facebook, Ms Zip still wasn't allowed to start an account in her name. Ironically, Zip was actually the transsexual woman who helped Facebook set up a bewildering array of gender options for people who think simple "man and woman" descriptions are gender biased and outdated.
#10 Avatar
It's the name of a James Cameron movie and a term that refers to a graphic image used to represent you online. But it also happens to be the last name of an Arizona couple, both of whom were banned from Facebook in August because their surname was flagged as being fake. After sending his passport, Mr Balizar Orion Avatar was once again able to enjoy all the delights of the social network.
#11 Moses
A Byzantine monk took the name Father Moses Wright when he joined the clergy, but Facebook said that wasn't "real" enough and forced him to go by the name he had at birth: Michael Wright. So what'd he do? He got a legal name change to Moses and finally got facebook to accept his name and give him an account.
