So many of you have this freckle...
If you take a look at the back of your wrist, you might notice a small freckle sitting right where your wrist meets your hand.
Now, if you casually check out the hands of people around you, you might be surprised to see that many of them have the same freckle in exactly the same spot.
And if someone catches you staring at their wrist, you can always lighten the moment by calling yourselves “freckle buddies.”
But there’s actually a solid reason why so many people have this freckle in that particular spot.
There have been several theories tossed around about this “frequent freckle.”
One of the more convincing ones comes from dermatologist Dr. Joyce Park, who explains it pretty clearly.
She says, “Freckles are basically areas of the skin where you have more pigment or melanin deposition from UV radiation.
“The forearms, the wrists, and the hands are really common spots to get that exposure.
“If you think about it, when you're driving, that side of your wrist and hand are just constantly being exposed to sunlight, even if you're wearing sleeves.”
That explanation makes a lot of sense. Even if you're careful about protecting yourself from the sun, your wrists and hands are often sticking out and catching those rays.
It’s easy to forget they’re still getting exposed.
Plus, when you’re slathering on sunscreen, how often do you remember to get your wrists or the backs of your hands?
It’s a spot that tends to get overlooked, even if you’re pretty diligent about sun protection.
But, as with any good scientific discussion, there are always other opinions.
Another dermatologist, Dr. Joshua Zeichner, offers a slightly different take on the freckle mystery.
He explains, “What we are actually seeing in these photos are moles or 'beauty marks.’
These spots are harmless overgrowths of pigment-producing cells, causing small brown spots on the skin.”
He adds that these types of moles are so common that almost everyone has "at least one mole on the arms."
While sun exposure might play a role, moles can pop up anywhere on the body, and you might notice other spots with similar patterns.
In the end, the formation of freckles and moles can happen for a variety of reasons.
Regardless of the exact cause, one thing that dermatologists agree on is the importance of taking care of your skin.
It’s essential to check on your moles and freckles regularly, just to be safe.
If you notice any changes, it’s always a good idea to speak with a doctor.
You don’t want to take any chances when it comes to skin health.
Like they say, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
