When Suzanne Gibbons, the founder of Animal Haven sanctuary in Ireland, heard about a donkey stuck in floodwaters, she knew she had to act immediately to save it.
After a violent storm knocked down the gate of the donkey’s enclosure, the animal wandered out and got trapped in fast-rising floodwaters.
The donkey's owner contacted Gibbons, explaining the urgent situation and asking for her help.
Recognizing the urgency, Gibbons quickly turned to Facebook, asking for immediate assistance.
She explained that they would need a boat, some strong individuals, and ropes in order to rescue the stranded donkey.
Thankfully, it wasn’t long before people responded to her call for help.
The local community came together, providing all the necessary tools and volunteers to make the rescue possible.
Initially, Gibbons had a hard time finding anyone willing to face the dangerous conditions with her.
She shared with BuzzFeed News,
"At first, I couldn't find anybody willing to help me go in because the river was flooding really badly."
But soon enough, Mike Fleming, a member of the Killorglin Rowing Club, stepped up to help.
Fleming not only offered his assistance but also brought along his boat, which was essential for the operation.
The rescue was an intense and careful operation.
Using life vests and ropes, Gibbons and her team worked together to secure the frightened donkey, who, despite being terrified, cooperated with the team.
A life preserver was placed around the donkey’s neck, and using a rope tied to it, they slowly but successfully guided the animal to safety.
The whole event was captured on video, showcasing the dedication and bravery of the rescuers.
Gibbons couldn’t praise Mike Fleming and another volunteer, Declan, enough for their efforts.
Reflecting on the experience, she told thejournal.ie,
"Never say something can't be done, just do it. Declan and Mike were beyond brave. So many people told me, 'Don't do it, it can't be done, you can't swim, you'll get killed.' These two men just said, 'Okay girl, let's give it a go.'"
Once the donkey was safely back on solid ground, the feeling of relief was overwhelming.
But perhaps the happiest one of all was the donkey itself.
The donkey, later named Mike after his rescuer, was grinning as if he were saying a big "thank you" to everyone who helped him.
That heartwarming smile soon went viral, touching hearts around the globe.
After the rescue, Mike the donkey was taken to the sanctuary, where he received proper care.
He was dried off, given a warm meal, and treated with antibiotics to prevent any potential health issues from the ordeal.
Gibbons told BuzzFeed that a vet had also checked Mike over due to concerns about pneumonia, and the donkey was placed under a heat lamp for extra warmth and comfort.
Thankfully, Mike seemed to recover well from his ordeal.
Mike’s now-famous smile wasn’t just a cute moment but also a sign of the deep gratitude he felt for being saved.
It was his way of expressing his thanks to the brave rescuers who risked their lives to ensure his safety.
His expression said everything—pure joy and complete relief.
