They don't tell you this in the beginning but retail life really sucks most of the time. You have to deal with crappy customers with bad attitudes and random schedules that really make it hard to have a life.

#2 Annoying customers are an everyday thing.

If you expect a customer to get straight to the point with you, you're sorely mistaken. Especially over the phone. They will talk on and on about random crap that has nothing to do with what they are actually calling for. No lady I don't care how upset you are at being transferred twice. Just tell me what you want.

#3 Rude customers think that we care.

These customers don't realize that we deal with hundreds maybe thousands of people each day. It won't bother us one bit if we never have to see your face again. Of course, anyone with common sense knows that you will be right back in the store anyway. Sigh.

If you are so certain that you can get a better deal somewhere else why don't you go there instead of ruining our day with your crappy attitude?

#5 Come back in an hour!

This one is especially annoying during the holiday season. The store has opening hours for a reason. No, we will not open the doors early for you. Please give us our precious extra few minutes of not having to deal with you. We need it.

#6 You can't even get clocked in good before it starts.

Customers can watch you come in, see you're still getting set up and still come over and ask you some dumb question and expect a quick response when you are clearly not able to give them any response yet. They don't care. They just don't care.

#7 Sometimes it doesn't pay to be polite.

It doesn't matter how nice you are, at some point you are going to deal with a customer who just wants to yell and scream at you and be a generally nasty person towards you. You get used to it.

#8 Working in retail teaches you skills that are truly useful.

The one thing that you can say about working in retail is that it really does teach you how to deal with crappy people and keep your cool.

#9 New employees don't know what they are getting themselves into.

You might be new on the job but it won't take long for one of your coworkers to show you the ins and outs and where to go de-stress after dealing with a succession of rude customers.

#10 It's not just the customers that are a pain in the butt.

Managers can be pretty bad too. Some managers will actually treat you pretty rotten until they are in front of a customer. Then they put on their smile and pretend like they were not just cursing you out 5 seconds ago.
