Gruesome video footage shows the moment a protective Sydney, Ohio father guns down his daughter's ex-boyfriend as the man tries to break into the family's home.
A chilling Ring camera video shows an Ohio homeowner shooting and killing his daughter's ex-boyfriend as he attempted to break into the family's home.
On July 31, a fatal shooting took place in Sydney, Ohio, killing 22-year-old James Rayl.
Rayl tries to open the door after being told to leave by the family inside, according to a newly released doorbell video obtained by WHIO-TV 7.
Rayl appears to try to break down the wooden front door by slamming his shoulder against it, defiant.
At one point, his ex-father, girlfriend Mitch Duckro, can be heard warning Rayl that he is armed.
The door is eventually forced open, and three gunshots are heard, sending Rayl fleeing, as shown in the video.
The 22-year-old walks a short distance down the porch steps before collapsing in the middle of a sun-dappled pathway.
First responders pronounced him dead at the scene. According to a joint press release from the county prosecutor and the local sheriff, as cited by the Sidney Daily News, an autopsy later revealed that Rayl had two gunshot wounds to the shoulders and a fatal wound to the back.
In a 911 audio recording obtained by WHIO-TV 7, a woman who identified the intruder as her ex-boyfriend is heard telling her father that Rayl is attempting to break down the door.
"Dad, is he trying to kill me?" the woman could be heard saying.
Duckro's daughter is heard telling him after he shoots Rayl, "Dad, there's nothing you could have done." According to the station, "you saved my life."
A Shelby County grand jury voted 8-1 earlier this month against indicting Duckro on charges related to Rayl's death, citing the state's "Stand Your Ground" legislation, which states that a homeowner has no legal duty to retreat from their property before shooting a pistol.
Rayl's family is outraged that Duckro will not be held accountable for the shooting and has started a Facebook page demanding justice.
“Mitch shot him in the back and killed him,” Rayl’s sister Jessica Colbert wrote in a recent post.
“I hope your days are more miserable than they’ve ever been. You’re a disgusting excuse of a human being along with your daughter.”
