During the discussion of their desire to become "fisher-them," Sam Smith was forced to correct Alex Jones of The One Show after the host accidentally misgendered them.
Sam Smith Corrects One Show Host After Being Misgendered Over Dream To Be 'Fisher-them'
After correcting BBC co-host Alex Jones for calling them a "fisherman" rather than a "fisher-them," Sam Smith has upset some viewers.
The 30-year-old, who uses the pronouns they/them, said that they wanted to become a "fisher-them" when questioned about a secret fishing hobby.
Ronan Keating, the host, asked Smith: "You're a big fan of fishing?"
They replied: "I do love fishing, yes! Yeah, I'd love to be a fisher-them."
Jones then asked: "What, like a fly fisherman?"
The artist then gently corrected her by saying: "I'd be any type of fisher-them.”
"I think I would like to, one day, I'd just like to end my days fishing.”
"Like sitting on a bank."
They added: "I do it on the sea and I do it on lakes. I've never done it alone, someone's almost taught me."
Piers Morgan stated in his response to the video that the singer "needs to shut up."
But, some viewers stood up for Smith and informed Morgan: "The fact that this bothers you so much says more about you than it does about Sam Smith."
A second person added: "True that man, I didn’t hear anything wrong with what they said at all! I love fishing too!"
A third said: "I think it makes sense… fisherman/fisherwoman / fisher-them…"
Recently, the singer responded to criticism of their raunchy new song video.
If you haven't already seen it, the singer of the band 'Unholy' made some noise with the video for their most recent song, "I'm Not Here to Make Friends."
The song's music video, which features Smith in a number of tight outfits, including dancers in corsets and suspenders, has ignited a discussion regarding the appropriate age for viewing music videos.
On The Graham Norton Show, Smith discussed the song and its attention-grabbing music video. He stated that the song's inspiration actually originated from a date, saying: “I went on a date with this guy and he just… people friend-zone me a lot on dates.”
“And the next day I went into the studio and I was, like, I’m sick of, like, I’ve got enough friends. I don’t need any more friends.”
Smith added: “Basically it’s set in a castle. It’s like Henry VIII’s castle.”
They also reassured viewers that: “Nothing seedy went on, guys. It wasn’t weird.”
