No one knows for sure when sand sculpting started. It is said that Egyptians made models of their pyramids from sand.

For a long time artists didn't get paid for their sculptures. It wasn't until the late 19th century when artists would receive money by passers-by tossing them their change.

In the late 1970's bigger and more intricately detailed sculptures came to the beaches of California. Where each artists would try to out do the other one.
Harrison Hot Springs, British Columbia, Canada.
A sand sculpture came to Rye beach, on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula in 2000 and put on display. in 2001 over 20,000 people traveled from all over to see the sculptors compete for championship status at Rye Beach.
Revere Beach, Massachusetts
After the Rye Beach championship competition, sculptors took their talents all over the world to compete.
Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
Lighthouse Square in Port Adelaide - Southern Australia opened sand sculpting exhibitions in December 2007
Ocean City, Maryland.
Frankston, Victoria opened sand sculpting exhibitions in January 2008 where for the first time sculptures would be lit up for night viewing.
Levante Beach, Benidorm, Spain
This is not your average sand castle. It is beautiful! I am sure it took a team to do this one. They probably don't have much time to get them done.

This one is perfect for a beach setting. Displays are usually left up for a while and usually washed away by rain.
Hampton Beach, New Hampshire
For some artists it is not uncommon to make a political statement with their sculptures. Sculptor Karen Fralich won $3000 for this piece she calls "Life" in 2015.
