The former Hollywood pair were married in 2008, with their divorce being finalized in 2011
Scarlett Johansson made an unusually short but meaningful comment about her ex-husband Ryan Reynolds, twelve years after their marriage ended in divorce.
Let’s take a moment to look back at 2008. That year saw the release of movie hits like Twilight and Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, Britney Spears made a memorable comeback to the spotlight, and Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States.
That same year also marked the marriage of two major Hollywood stars—Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds—who got married in a private and quiet ceremony held in Vancouver, Canada.
The couple had gotten engaged just four months before walking down the aisle. Their marriage, however, only lasted two years before they announced their separation and eventually finalized their divorce in 2011.
Since then, both Johansson and Reynolds have moved on and found new partners. Reynolds married Gossip Girl star Blake Lively in 2012, while Johansson tied the knot twice more—first with Romain Dauriac in 2014 and later with Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost in 2020.
Even though their split was widely known, both actors have generally chosen to keep that chapter of their lives private. They rarely discuss their past relationship, especially in public interviews or appearances.
However, the subject did come up when Johansson joined Gwyneth Paltrow on an episode of The goop Podcast in 2023.
As their discussion shifted toward relationships and marriage, Paltrow expressed her surprise over the fact that Johansson had once been with the Deadpool actor.
"Oh that's right, because I forgot that you were married to Ryan Reynolds!" Paltrow said, then added: "Goals!"
Johansson laughed at the remark and responded with a lighthearted explanation, making it clear that their relationship wasn’t very long-lasting.
"We weren't married very long, but we were when I first met you, for Iron Man [2] or whatever," she said.
Paltrow continued with a smile: "We love a good Ryan Reynolds in our house."
Nodding in agreement, Johansson replied: "He's a good guy."
When they officially parted ways, the two released a joint statement to the public that read: "After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we've decided to end our marriage."
"We entered our relationship with love and it's with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."
Looking back, one unexpected upside to their breakup—at least from Johansson's perspective—is that she never had to witness her husband being involved in a mashed potato scene that was, well, extremely bizarre. That memorable moment was something Blake Lively got to experience instead.
Well, sort of. I mean, movies are kind of real, aren’t they?
And honestly, being with someone like Reynolds probably means expecting the unexpected. His humor often takes the wildest turns, and he’s definitely not afraid to go all out for a laugh.
