Police say Alicia Hughes’ husband allegedly walked in on her with a student
A high school secretary was taken into custody after her husband allegedly found her in bed with an 18-year-old student.
The Union City Police Department reported that Alicia Hughes’ husband walked in on the pair. Officers said this led to a report of an alleged battery.
In a Facebook statement outlining the incident, the department wrote: "Law enforcement was initially notified of an alleged battery that occurred overnight."
"During the course of the investigation, officers learned that Hughes' husband had discovered her with an 18-year-old student of Randolph Eastern School Corporation and confronted the individuals."
"It is alleged that Hughes was battered during that altercation. The alleged battery is being investigated by the Randolph County Sheriff's Department."
It is not yet clear whether Hughes’ husband will face any charges related to the alleged altercation.
As the case continued, the Union City Police Department said investigators also found that Hughes "had also engaged in a sexual relationship with a separate high school student who was 17 years old at the time".
During questioning about the reported relationship with the 18-year-old, the 31-year-old Indiana woman admitted that she had sex with him three times. She maintained that it was "not before he was 18".
Video of her interview, obtained by Law&Crime, shows her saying that “the physical thing had been going on since the end of January.” She then added: "This is the third time that I've been with him...not before he was 18."
Hughes told the officer that her actions were not justified. She said she had been looking for attention because of problems in her marriage.
"As stupid as that sounds," she said. "And that's where I'm at. And now I'm here."
The investigator later asked whether she had ever had sex with any other students. She repeatedly denied doing so.
However, police affidavits obtained by Law&Crime state that a 17-year-old student claimed he and Hughes had sex five times. This allegedly included an encounter at a Dollar General store.
"I have met him, but I never slept with him," Hughes is heard saying. "I hung out with him...not for very long."
She also admitted to sending him “pictures,” but she continued to deny having sex with him.
When the officer asked how the situation began, she replied, "I think I'll need my lawyer at this point."
Hughes was then arrested inside the interview room. She faces five counts of child seduction linked to the allegations involving the 17-year-old. Each charge carries a potential sentence of up to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
After her arrest, she was taken to the Randolph County Jail, where bond was set at $25,000 cash.
The New York Post reported that her initial hearing scheduled for February 20 was canceled. The court later found probable cause for the charges and set a new hearing for April 15, followed by a pre-trial conference on April 16 and a jury trial planned for June 15.
Randolph Eastern School Corporation superintendent Neal Adams said the secretary has “been removed from all duties with students pending the outcome of the legal process.”
Police also commended the school district for its swift cooperation and transparency as the investigation continues.
