Scientists Mimic Mars Soil Conditions, Successfully Grow Crops

A successful experiment has been carried out by scientists at Wageningen University. The results have been good and according to Dr Wamelink, the yields came surprisingly close to those grown in normal compost.

Research center in the Netherlands created Mars-equivalent soil in the lab and managed to grow ten species of plants in it, including peas and tomatoes.

The team planted tomato, rye, radish, pea, leek, spinach, garden rocket, cress, quinoa, and chives in each type of soil, along with a control of Earth soil.

The researchers also grew the same 10 crops - tomato, rye, radish, pea, leek, spinach, garden rocket, cress, quinoa, and chives - in soil that mimicked Moon soil, and showed that these crops were about half as successful as Mars crops.
