#1 The Phoenix99 is the world’s first neural stimulation technology. It’s been tested extensively since 1997 and, thanks to a recent funding boost, is now ready to be implanted in humans.

Greg Suaning, one of the inventors, said, "We're really excited because it proves the technology and implementation technique works."

"Patients will ‘learn' to use the technology, in the same way a person implanted with a cochlear ear implant ‘learns' to hear electrical impulses.

#2 Scientists hope the incredible bionic eye technology will restore sight to people suffering from Retinitis Pigmentosa, a leading cause of blindness in young people, and macular degeneration.

For up to 2 million people around the world, existing medicines can only slow the progression of degenerative eye diseases; the bionic eye will, one day, completely restore their sight.

It's hoped that within 5 years the technology, taking around 2-3 hours to implant, could be available in mainstream medicine
