The 1925 house has several stories as to why and how it got built, but the most popular amongst people in Seattle is that a bitter divorce took place and the judge ordered the husband the home and his wife the yard, which was very tiny. So, she did what women do best. She got revenge.
Scorned Divorcee Builds 4-Foot Wide House To Get Revenge On Greedy Ex-Husband
#1 Beautiful Home From The Front
Looking at the house from the front, it appears as any Seattle home, yellow in color and craftily designed. Old, but very well maintained.
#2 The Side View
But from the side of the house, it's a completely different look. The house is just a glass door leading inward to one of the most unique little houses ever constructed. One tale spun by locals in Seattle is that the original homeowner wanted the piece of pie-shaped land directly in front of his beautiful home. After a bitter dispute over the price and usage, the owner of the sliver of land erected a house on the property out of spite as to block the homeowner's view.
#3 Wife Awarded 17 Feet Of Adjoining Land
However, the most popular and believable story about what locals refer to as 'The Spite House' is that the wife of the owner was caught cheating on her miserable husband and he tossed her out. She maintained her innocence, and the judge hearing the divorce case decided that she should get something out of the home since her money paid for it. So he gave the house to the husband and to the wife he awarded the little slice of land directly in adjacent to the property, which was just over 17 feet at one end.
#4 She Built An Obstructive Home
The wife, very angry and out for revenge, then decided to utilize her property, and she designed and constructed one of the cutest little tiny houses ever. Of course, this was before tiny houses were in vogue, so it was the talk of the city. The house is built as a triangle, meaning one end of the house is only 55 inches wide. The other end is 15 feet wide. Between both ends, just 860 square feet of living space. She even painted the side facing the ex-husband's house black, making his view even less tolerable.
#5 It Has Two Levels
The house, located in the Montlake neighborhood of Seattle, was last on the market in 2003 and sold for $320,000. The house is for sale once more, and the asking price is $519,000. The Spite House has 2 bedrooms and 1.75 bathrooms, and some places where you can reach out and touch both sides of the home. But it's the layout that makes this house unique in every way.
#6 A Masterful Design
The cleverly designed structure is certainly an architectural masterpiece, managing to pack a seemingly full sized house into such a small space. The home features two separate living rooms, one on the main floor and one on the basement level.
#7 A Master Bed & Bathroom
The main level also features a master bedroom at the widest end, which includes its own full sized bathroom, and plenty of windows for natural lighting.
#8 Small But Spacious
Entering the home from the side door, you walk into the kitchen area, which looks pretty small but features all of the amenities of a standard kitchen, though it is only 5x9 feet. Every spot was utilized for storage and the appliances were purchased to fit a 1970 mobile home.
#9 The Main Living Room
The main living room, right behind the wooden door on the front side of the house, is beautifully designed and breezy even though it is just 8 feet by 10 feet in size. Bright colors give the house a feel of openness and bigger size. There isn't much room for a TV, but guests are impressed by just how much has fit into such a small space.
#10 The Basement Level
Going down the stairs to the underground level, there is a second bedroom that is 8 feet by 9 feet. At the opposite end of the hall is another tiny bedroom or office space, that is just 6x9. The bigger room also features a full bathroom with a shower and tub.
#11 Another Big Bathroom
The house features two bathrooms, one on each floor and located within the bedrooms. However, the one on the main floor does not have a tub, only a shower, unlike the one in the basement. Bright paint and a big window make the room feel bigger than its little space.
#12 A Two Space Driveway
People who come to look at the little, amazingly designed home are flabbergasted by the fact that it houses a driveway big enough for two cars, complete with a small storage area on the north end of the tiny structure.
#13 Gorgeous Landscaping
Impressively, the backyard and patio are almost as big as some of the areas of the house itself. It is situated directly under a huge shade tree and has room for lawn furniture and a barbeque area.
No one is 100% certain about the backstory to the construction of the home in 1925, but it has survived a few owners over the years, a little reconstruction and modifications, and is still one of the most impressive tiny homes in the United States. It just goes to show what a little revenge can do.
