Selena Gomez recently disclosed she can't carry children due to health issues
Selena Gomez had a straightforward response for critics who believe her openness about her bipolar diagnosis and inability to carry a child makes her a "victim."
The star of Only Murders in the Building recently spoke at a Women in Film event in California, where she opened up about the strength she finds in vulnerability and how she's navigated being genuine in the entertainment world.
"I truly believe that there is power in being vulnerable and telling people when you need help or when you want help—that is not shameful," Gomez explained in a video from the event that has since gone viral on Twitter.
She didn't hold back when addressing those who judge her for her transparency.
"So yeah, I shared that I can't carry a child. Yeah, I shared that I have bipolar... fk off," she said, met with applause from the audience.
Gomez went on to explain that this is simply part of her reality.
"That's what my life is. That's who I am," she continued.
"And I only want to be an advocate for women, and that's why I share, that's why I like to be honest."
She emphasized that everyone is dealing with something, reminding others not to feel ashamed of their struggles.
"Everybody is going through something. I don't have it all put together. I'm not a, you know, whatever… I am me and that's all I can be."
In true Selena fashion, she ended on a strong note: "So screw anyone who tells you you're a victim. You're a survivor in my book."
Earlier this year, the singer and actress shared with Vanity Fair the emotional reality of being unable to carry her own children due to health concerns.
"I haven't ever said this, but I unfortunately can't carry my own children," she revealed.
She elaborated that her medical conditions would make it unsafe for her and the baby during pregnancy.
"I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby's in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while."
Selena explained that she had always imagined having children the traditional way.
"It's not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone," she admitted.
But over time, she has come to terms with this part of her life, and now embraces other paths to motherhood, such as surrogacy or adoption.
"I'm in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me."
She continued, "It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I'm one of those people."
Despite the challenges, Selena remains optimistic about the future. "I'm excited for what that journey will look like, but it'll look a little different."
But no matter how her journey unfolds, she's clear about one thing: "At the end of the day, I don't care. It'll be mine. It'll be my baby."
