Let's be honest—sometimes there are sort of "secret" ways we can make more money at our places of work. But when we really begin to think about why some of these things work, the truth can be quite creepy.

We all know sex sells, then why are pigtails so lucrative?

It’s a hairstyle often sported by young girls — but a grown woman has said that her tips as a server are better when she wears them.

Bella of @b_woodard on TikTok says she works as a waitress, and wanted to test the popular theory by female food service industry workers on TikTok, that wearing pigtails will result in more tips from customers. In the clip, she went through the process of changing up her hairstyle and then reported her results after a night of work.

“I saw the Tiktok about this girl — she’s a waitress and I’m a waitress — how she gets more tips when her hair’s in pigtails for some weird, crazy reason,” she explained in a 59-second clip.

The 21-year-old then proceeds to put her blonde hair in pigtails, ostensibly dubious of the oddly specific advice.

“OK I literally look insane right now so I’m gonna braid these pieces, and if this works I’m just gonna say like that is so weird and gross, but I’m down for more tips — so it doesn’t matter,” Woodard said in the video, which has been viewed 3.9 million times so far.

The footage then cuts to the end of her shift, as a shocked Woodard confirmed that the “pigtail hack” actually works.

“Y’all were not lying,” the waitress said. “I got a $135 tip by one guy tonight. Wear pigtails to work, I’m boutta be doing this everyday.”

The revelation was met with both support and speculation by those who wondered why this particular hairstyle was so successful.

“Works every time, I used to call them my tiptails,” one user joked.

“It’s the Brittany Spears school girl thing,” asserted another.

Due to the popularity of the pigtails video, Bella decided to start a whole series of videos on her TikTok page titled, "What Hairstyle Makes the Most Tips as a Waitress."

Each video was designed the same way, featuring Bella doing her hair in a new style, and later reporting back on how successfully the hairstyle seemed to earn more tips.

Later when she tried bubble-braid pigtails, Bella stated:

"These got nearly as many tips as the original small pigtails. So definitely do your hair in some kind of pigtails."
"I'm all about making more tips, and if men love this, then, of course, I'm going to do it."

Others speculated as to why folks feel the need to tip more when their server is rocking pigtails, while some joked that they would make sure to steer clear of this hairstyle for their children as a means of curbing any unwanted attention.

“It’s because we look more young and vulnerable,” one viewer wrote.

“Do y’all think it’s bc hair like that makes girls look young,” another questioned.

“Cool I’m never putting pigtails in my daughters hair again,” a third added.

Others referred to a certain “creepiness” factor associated with grown men being attracted to pigtails, as the hairdo is usually associated with children.

“‘For some weird crazy reason’ bestie, I’ve got news for you……..,” one user stated.

“Not men because attracted to young girls BYE,” another said.

“Ask not what you can do for the patriarchy, but what the patriarchy can do for you,” a further viewer argued.

Business Insider also penned an article that cites a study that found male customers tend to tip servers more money if they find them attractive, aka “pretty privilege.”

While it's smart to take advantage of what works and earns more money in the workplace, we have to question why these things work and if they're worth doing anyway.
