Ollie’s Heartbreaking Story
Sal Valdepeña, who founded Balooja's Foundation located in Upland, California, encountered Ollie and saw something in him that many others didn't.
Despite Ollie being over 15 years old and showing extreme aggression due to his harsh treatment in the past, Sal refused to give up on him.
He brought Ollie into his care, finding him a loving foster home that would soon become much more.
Cathi Perez, a woman with a big heart for dogs and extensive experience in fostering, opened her home to Ollie.
Their first meeting was far from ideal; Ollie was in terrible condition, his fur matted and his body covered in feces, barely able to stand due to old injuries. Cathi recounted on Facebook:
"He was a filthy matted mess covered with feces and urine stained, he was unable to walk and he was extremely aggressive, lunging and thrashing out at anyone and anything that came near him and was on the fast track for euthanasia."
Ollie's past traumas had left him constantly on edge, even in the safety of his new home.
For days, he would simply lay in his pen, growling at any attempt of kindness from Cathi.
The extent of his mistreatment had made him wary of human touch, making it impossible for Cathi to even get close.

However, with proper medical care and a lot of patience, Ollie began to show signs of improvement.
After being put on medication to manage his pain and anxiety, he was able to stand, albeit briefly.
This marked the beginning of a new chapter for Ollie, slowly opening up to the concept of love under Cathi's gentle care.
He even started allowing her to clean his pen and gently pat him, a significant milestone considering his initial aggression.
Yet, Ollie's journey was filled with ups and downs, as he often reverted to his old, defensive behaviors.
Despite these setbacks, Cathi remained patient and understanding, recognizing the deep-seated issues Ollie was grappling with.
"He isn't always feeling it but he is much more at ease and relaxed, his medications kicking in and relieving his pain and anxiety is a major factor," she shared.

She decided to not just be his foster mom but to become his forever family, offering him unwavering companionship and love in his twilight years.

She expressed her feelings on Facebook: "His was a tragic life of neglect abuse and abandonment but we all rallied to his side, he had a community behind him, he crossed ever so gently, while I whispered to him I love you."
Cathi was heartbroken but took solace in knowing that Ollie's final memories were filled with love and kindness.
