The Internet and social media have completely revolutionized the way people talk and connect, and that's certainly true for the world of beauty and makeup. Instagram is a haven for makeup artists, and instead of just keeping things simple, they're constantly trying to figure out new techniques that will impress their followings, even crossing the line between everyday looks to more subversive aesthetics.

The really great thing, though, is that you don't have to be a makeup artist to create impressive, beauty-related art for the Internet. Because we have access to inspiration from YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook, anyone can teach themselves the tricks of the trade -- and even cultivate their own talent without ever having been taught.

Sandra Holmbom is one of those people. She's used her self-taught makeup skills to create some interesting and slightly bizarre makeup effects, and you can see how she did one of them below. Warning: This is some pretty eye-catching stuff.

She starts off with something simple.

First, she coats her lips with white, then lines them with a simple black liner which will make the outer shape of her design.

If you think about it, you can already see the shape forming.

Any guesses on what it might be? Don't worry, there's more to it than this. What she's about to create is actually pretty cool.

This is where things start to come together.

Using a small brush, she's creating the outer shapes in the center of the lips.

She uses the black to fill in the inner circle. At this point, you can probably tell what she's creating: That's right, the center spot is a dark pupil...she's transforming her lips into eyes.

Then it's time to grab the eyeshadow. The colors of the eyeshadow palette are perfect for creating the design she's attempting. She paints them on with a brush.

You can really tell when she closes her mouth. It looks like she's almost done, but there's more!

Now it's time to give the eye more depth.Instead of just leaving it flat, she's giving this eyeball some dimension using slightly different colors of eyeshadow and liner.

She pays careful attention the entire way. This ensures that what she's creating looks as realistic as possible.

Then she does something unexpected.

If you're wondering what she's up to, think about it: What does every eyelid have?

Hint: You can glue these on to your real eyes, too.

That's right...she's actually gluing false lashes onto her eyes to create an even more realistic effect.

She adds some liner on the bottom for the bottom lashes.

She's even subtly lined her lips to make the eye really pop.

For someone who just feels like makeup is a hobby, this is pretty damn cool.

Could you recreate something similar, or do you think this takes some serious artistry that only a talented few could master?
